Heavy Duty Dually: 1969 Dodge W300 4×4 Sweptline

This is a beast of a truck with an interesting history.  The truck was originally a 1969 Dodge W300 Sweptline 4×4 dually, although the cab is from a D200 (more on that later).  Found here on eBay with a buy it now price of $14,000, the truck is currently in Farmington, Arkansas.  If you have the need for a heavy duty hauler with vintage style, this may be the truck for you.

The truck is a little rough, but seems like it’s fairly solid.  Apparently the truck was about ten years old when a tree fell across the cab causing enough damage that a new cab was needed.  The owner went to a salvage yard and found a 1969 D200 that donated its cab and also found a 1979 Dodge that had been wrecked.  That truck donated its 440 cubic inch engine and transmission to help rebuild and refresh the original truck.

Here is the afore mentioned 440 that was found in a salvage yard.  It appears to have underwent a recent rattle-can restoration and shows most of its originality.  The current owner says he’s done a lot of the maintenance to get the truck running reliably and that it “runs great with out any smoking or weird noises.”

These trucks look like they weigh 10,000 pounds.  The boxy styling, tall profile and high stance make them look tough and heavy duty.  Add six aggressive tires and you’ve got one mean truck.  The seller does say that the new owner will need to do some more work to the truck to make it a reliable daily driver, but a lot of the major work is done.  If you’re in the market for an older truck to pull your race car or advertise your construction business, this may be the truck for you.

How about a Weezer “Hash pipe” or Willy Nelson “Roll me up and smoke me when I’m gone” reference once in awhile?

      Cool truck with machismo!

Red flags are falling before my eyes. Truck is listed with the donor cab’s D200 2WD VIN as a clear-title truck. Makes me think there were and/or are title issues with this one. As much as I love these old Dodges – especially ones like this one – caveat emptor.

This truck scares me, and I don’t scare easily. Rough as a night in jail and definitely not worth anywhere near the asking price. Nowhere near orginal. Rear dually fenders are cobbled from what looks like 1950’s step side fenders and the body work that grafted them to the truck appears to be coming apart. Was probably a flatbed, if the frame is original. Not a barn find, maybe a junkyard find.

Those look similar to mid 60 Ford step side fenders grafted on there.
Single wheel split rims on front, bud wheels on back. Some one may have added longer wheel studs to the rear or swapped the rear differential .

Actually I apologise , after looking at it on eBay ,the ” buy it now ” price IS scary .Closed knuckle Dana 44 I think , Nice divorced NP205 transfercase , is that a Winnebago sytle floor shifter, I believe those late 70s 440s still have thick blocks ,some even are supposed to have extra ribbing cast in , great engine trans. combo . It’s a cool work horse though

From what I remember, 1978 was the last year for the 440. In 1978 it was limited to Chrysler New Yorkers, Chrysler Newports, Dodge Monaco Police Pursuits, and Plymouth Fury Police Pursuits. Maybe someone with more Pentastar knowledge car chime in.

daily driver? oh the days of pain driving such a truck… only saving grace is this one your not wrestling with a clutch and shift stick that sometimes can be removed from the floor and quickly stuffed back in to place. $14K? and a kick in the hind-end.

The absolute epitome of trucks, zenith, if you will. These trucks were designed to haul gooseneck trailers full of logs, SLOWLY out of the woods, with all the wheels grinding out the torque. To drive this on a highway for any length of time, would be nuts. I can feel the steering shimmy and wander already, and bias ply tires, further compounding the issue( and let’s not forget the “widow maker” split rims it has) and the ride, well, not the best. Price? I’m shocked and dismayed. $1,000 dollar truck, and go haul logs out of the woods. Tough truck, military grade, even, but to drive around, no thanks.

This looks like a 3/4 ton converted into a 1 ton by changing out the rear axle assemble. It’s quit common to see this conversion with the front wheels left as original and the back changed up to the 1 ton wheel. Down side is you now need to carry 2 different spare tires. Personally I would have put in a Cumins diesel and over drive automatic, this 440 would be a giant gas hog. Especially without the overdrive trans. Needs lots of work I certainly would not pay the asking price $14k. More like $4k. I’d keep the add on fenders they look ok. Finally I’d see if I fit up some bud wheels on the front.

This guy did enough to make the truck start and move but be ready to do all new hoses, belts, wires and brake system including the metal lines and wheel cylinders. The tires obviously were flat for a long time judging by the cracks in the side walls and if it’s a 16.5″ that’s an expensive size to replace. With that asking price the seller is searching for a sucker or, he’s been smoking his socks.

after spending a couple grand to get it road worthy it might be a $3000 truck, then spend $50 to go 100 miles, I’ll stick with my Cummins and 20 MPG

Looks like another “hold my beer while I weld this”, project. Nothing about this is factory, the rear fenders are 53- 79 Ford stepside.

I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in that butt-ugly piece of crap. With few exceptions, Dodge hasn’t made a decent looking truck since 1950.

I never saw that shifter used on a pickup truck — only on vans.

There’s a whole lot of questions on this one!

14K?!?!?!?!? For what?! I am usually not one to comment on pricing versus product but I had to do a triple check to make sure it wasn’t time to “shut the beer fridge for the night”!!!!!!! (thankfully it’s not)
If anyone can enlighten me on where the $14K is, I would be extremely grateful and obviously much more educated!!!!!!!!!
