High Mileage Survivor: 1966 Ford Mustang

If you were around in the 1960s, you probably remember how prolific the original Ford Mustang was. With 1.2 million copies produced in 1964-66, you saw them at every street corner. If you worked at Ford Motor Co., you likely racked up a lot of overtime during those years. This 1966 edition is your typical “secretary’s car” with a 200 cubic inch inline-6 and an automatic transmission. Located in Arlington, Washington, this pony car survivor is available here on craigslist for $15,000 OBO. Another vintage tip from “Curvette”.

Except for the color, this ’66 Mustang looks like the one I had back in the day. Same engine and tranny, black interior, console, and regular wheel covers. Mine was dark green, but after I sold it, the next owner painted it Springtime Yellow like this one (why?). We’re told this example is well used, as it should be at 180,000 miles. No mention is made of an engine or tranny rebuild, but one would have been needed by now.

We don’t know the history of this Ford, but it looks nice enough, though some detailing would help its presentation. As would a photo of the engine compartment. The only noted flaw is a couple of cracks in the dash pad. It may need new brakes, as the seller mentions those parts are coming with the sale. And four new tires are also included, though not mounted.

Separate from the deal with the Mustang is a 9-inch rear end and a 4-speed manual transmission. But there’s no indication that either is needed for this car unless you decide you want less gas mileage and drop a 289 V8 under the hood in place of the six-banger. I sold my Mustang in 1975 for $700 (if only we’d known then what we know now).
