As much as we hear about the economy shuddering and the collector car hobby cooling off, there are still plenty of signs of life that tell us what’s actually happening: the cars that should have never sold for what they did in the pandemic hype have come back down to Earth, and the special models that people of means actually want will continue to sell for solid money. This pertains to all segments of the hobby, including the replica/kit car world, where this claimed dimensionally-correct Lamborghini Countach replica here on eBay is currently sitting at bids to $40,000 with no reserve.

Now, like anything else, when there’s a group that understands a niche and follows it closely, we’re likely to see strong bidding for special cars. I can’t claim to know much about this particular Countach replica, but I appreciate the level of detail the seller provides explaining why this one stands apart from the rest of the herd of crummy, low-buck kit cars. The listing explains how this Countach has the right details, like a sloping roof line (as opposed to flat like so many other examples), the right length thanks to a custom stretched Fiero chassis, actual Lamborghini wheels, and a true curved glass windshield.

Believe it or not, those seemingly insignificant visual clues stand out like a sore thumb on cars that are more hastily put together. The one downside to this car is, like so many others, you have to make do with the standard Fiero cockpit. Now, I understand the next owner has free reign to build it the way he or she wants, but I do wish more of theses clones – that get so many other details right – would also make the same effort inside the car to bring it across the finish line. Having the right details like a correct roof line and windshield are huge and definitely complex to achieve, so why not build a fiberglass dash and cover it with leather?

Obviously, the seller didn’t built this kit, so that’s not on him – but hopefully, the next owner will consider doing that. The good news is the seller has made some very smart improvements under the hood to ditch the commonplace 350 or other crate engine special in favor of a powerful LT4 engine removed from a Chevrolet Corvette, paired to a manual gearbox. This has to be an absolute rocket ship and I don’t doubt the claim that it matches the performance of the original Countach. While it will never be as special as the real thing, it’s nice to see a replica that gets some major details right.
