Hold The Phone! 1974 AMC Gremlin

g1

This remarkably original 1974 AMC Gremlin started it’s life as an official car for Bell of Pennsylvania. You can still see what’s left of the original signage on the door, indicating that this may be the original paint as well. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Christine S. for sending in this vintage 1970’s compact find. While there’s certainly some wear and tear showing, there’s not a lot of rust, which considering this car is in Batavia, New York location is pretty unusual. It’s advertised here on craigslist for $3,900.

I don’t know if there’s a subset of folks that collect telephone equipment, but if so I would imagine this would be quite a find for them. The little AMC doesn’t appear to have a lot of rust, apart from part of the driver’s side door sill that has some corrosion. There’s an AMC inline 6 under the hood; I can’t tell whether it’s the 232 or 258 cubic-inch version. Either one is an extremely smooth and reliable engine, and plenty of power for a car this size.

g4

Although there’s a lot of debris, the interior doesn’t look too bad. There’s an automatic transmission, an extra seat, and a bunch of extra parts. As a matter of fact, there’s even an extra complete car!

g5

Yes, a complete or at least mostly complete parts car comes with this little gem. The white one even has good tires–what more could you want out of a Gremlin?

If built correctly these make great wheel standing cars. There’s one at the Wheelstanding Nationals at Byron Dragway that places in the top 3 every year.

If it was ordered new by the phone Co., then it most likely has the smaller base 232ci. engine.

I’d like to own this car, but then I would have to get a lime green polyester leisure suit, a white patent leather belt, white shoes, and a vanity plate that reads “loser.”
