Hot Rod Short Bed: 1976 Dodge D100

Man, this 1976 Dodge D100 is about as good as it gets for a sleeper-style rat rod. The seller has done it right, sticking with a short wheelbase, single cab model that features a fairly monstrous drivetrain that has been dyno-tested to put down 506 horsepower with 537.9 lb-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. The exterior appearance is the sort of look that hot rod builders would kill for when they’re creating a customer project with “fake” patina, and the seller notes there is no rust to speak of. Throw in an awesome wheel and tire set up against an otherwise bone-stock appearance and you have a home run. Find the Dodge here on eBay with bids to $5,800 and no reserve.

I can’t get over how perfect the stance is on this truck. I realize that stance has become somewhat of a sneered-at word given some elements of the import scene are determined to make their vehicles ride and handle as poorly as possible in the name of style, but stance also refers to how a truck like this can sit with complete purpose, ready to rock at a moment’s notice. The seller notes the suspension setup includes Gregg Luneack’s Launcher Super Stock leaf springs, and that the wheels are Weld Draglites with 15” X 5” upfront and the staggered rears measuring 15” X 10” and mounted on brand new Hoosier Drag Radials.

The interior is just a stock Dodge D100 interior, with no major alterations from stock. It’s clean and conservative, just what you want to see on a truck with such a prodigious powerplant under the hood. The drivetrain does all the talking here, as the shifter is the stock assembly and the instrument panel is mostly factory except for a very cool and period-correct dash-mounted Sun tachometer that actually works. The bench seat has been reupholstered in factory materials, but otherwise, the cabin has been left alone. If it were mine, I’d likely swap out the bus-like steering wheel for something more sporting, but otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Underhood is where all of our attention should lie, as this powerplant has been reimagined with upgraded components throughout. The heads are Mopar 915 closed chambers with a “…competition port and polish done by Rick at HBR,” according to the seller. The pistons are JE flat top, fly-cut for valve clearance. The engine also features a hydraulic camshaft from Custom Cams with .323 & .322 lift. Finally, the intake is a Holly Street Dominator with a 4781 Holly double pumper 850 cfm carburetor, among other enhancements. The transmission is a stock 727 with a shift kit installed, and the list goes on. If you’re looking for an awesome street rod with unsuspecting looks, this Dodge D100 seems like a home run.

Nice truck. Well executed modifications on a desirable platform, if you like trucks. The next owner can either paint it or leave it as is, based on their personal taste, they can’t go wrong with either direction.

Stance should never be sneered at, every car has a stance, it just refers to how a car sits. Nothing more. People may or may not like a particular stance, but it has one nonetheless, it could be stock ride height, lowered, raised, those are all stances, even Gassers have their own distinctive stance. It’s the execution by a particular owner that people are objecting to. Sometimes those complaining forget, the car was not built to satisfy them, only the taste of the owner.

I bet it flys, I had a Warlock that I transplanted a ’69 440 into. It was beyond fast, wish I never sold it but the Harley needed tires and I wanted an el Camino.

Dave, I wanted an el Camino since high school, I found an ’80 with a sick 229 V6 , 3 spd. stick. I had a fresh 350/350 and a rebuilt Super T10 laying around collecting dust so I figured why not. The el Camino was a fun ride.

The proper adverb for a Dodge D100 with a decent 440 in it is Brutally.
