Incomplete Package: 1965 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet

Given how many storage containers I spot on a regular basis, it amazes me how many of them seem to have collector cars hiding inside. I mean, the logistics alone of getting your own storage container seem somewhat obtuse, let alone transporting a valuable car to be deposited inside of one without prying eyes noticing. Regardless, that’s the case with this desirable 1965 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet here on eBay, which was purchased as a restoration project that won’t come to fruition.

Frankly, I wouldn’t shed any tears for the owner not being able to complete their project. They likely paid well under what this SC-spec cabriolet is now worth, so I anticipate a nice payday is coming. The body is said to be in nice shape with matching panels and was previously owned by a restoration shop known as Speed Line Restoration. I can’t find any record of the shop in Google, so they may be long since closed up.

The interior is a blank slate, but what’s there looks good. The dash appears to have been at least scrubbed down to a bare, paintable surface, and the floors appear solid. Per the seller: “All the body and metal work has been completed by previous owner and ready for final prep and paint. Several items are lacking to complete the assembly of the body and engine. Engine needs a rebuild.” So, despite the solid foundation, there’s a fair amount of work yet to be done.

The aspect that would discourage me the most is the sourcing of the missing parts. But if we’re being realistic, the market for Porsche spares, both OEM and reproduction, has likely only increased since this 356 went into long-term storage. While the prices have certainly risen dramatically, I’m guessing access to the hard-to-find bits as well, especially with businesses seemingly devoted to sleuthing for hidden-away Porsches and parts. Bidding is already past $35K, but the reserve remains unmet.

Likely to be purchased by someone with a stash of appropriate parts just waiting for a semi solid car.

Good start, but for the money I would rather have a Beck repro.

I’ve had two of these 356 Cabrio’s back in the late 60’s when they were the hottest handling car around. Today their left behind by new technology and engine design. Both of mine were not the best riding cars for any trips, and not the fastest on the Autobahn where I drove them. Guess I want a little better car for the money now. Ah,,,,,,but very fond memories in my younger days when I was single……….

I have seen these cars carry six figure prices fully restored! I am almost positive that a while back another site had one posted in the mid to high 90’s! They are definitely special cars, but this one has a long way to go to get there!
