Indy Pace Car: 1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Since 1911, a special car has paced the field at the Indianapolis 500. On nine occasions, that honor has gone to the Chevy Camaro. The Camaro Z28 was again selected for these duties in 1993 and – as a marketing tie-in – Chevy produced 645 copies for sale to the public. Not only is this 1993 Z28 one of those cars, we’re told it was one of the few cars that were used on the track and race parade. This vehicle is in Havasu City, Arizona and available here on craigslist for $19,900.

The 1993 pace car was from the fourth generation of the Camaro, which was produced from 1993-02. Total Camaro production was under 40,000 units that year, with nearly half or under 18,000 being Z28s. The Camaro Z28 used a 5.7-liter LT1 V-8 engine rated at 275 hp and 325 lbs⋅ft of torque and it was first employed in the Corvette in 1992. The Z28 came standard with a 4L60 automatic transmission, but you could get a six-speed manual at no extra cost.

These cars pop up for sale from time to time, but seldom does the seller indicate that their car saw time on the Indianapolis track. This one is numbered 108 and had the honor of being part of the event that saw Emerson Fittipaldi win the race. From what we can see, this car has been well-preserved and has managed just over 50,000 miles in its 27 years. It has no doubt spent a lot of time in the garage where the photos were taken. This car comes with T-Tops and an upgraded stereo system.

When they pop up for sale, these Camaro pace cars seem to be going for $25-30,000, which is about 20 percent higher than regular Z28’s and the seller’s car. So, this is not a car to purchase to drive except to auto shows, it’s one to collect. But there are a lot of other cars in this price range that are likely to offer a higher return down the road. Thanks to Rex Miller for this tip!

This is the 4th Indy Camaro I’ve seen for sale this year. Now is time to dump’em I guess.

Very nice 4th Gen but the price is too high. I bought a 1994 Z28 convertible with only 10k original miles for $9,000.00. My Z28 convertible is mint and still has the new car smell in the interior.
