Just Two Owners! 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We’ve seen a lot of the fourth-generation Chevy Monte Carlos here on Barn Finds (1981 to 1988 years). And, interestingly, most of them seem to be the NASCAR-inspired Aerocoupe from 1986 and 1987. But that’s not the case with this nice example from ’87, an SS (Super Sport) that was a notch up from the LS. We’re told this is a two-owner car with 65,000 miles and runs as good as it looks. This pampered Chevy is in Aberdeen, Washington, and is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $17,500. A shoutout goes to T.J. for yet another grand tip!

The Monte Carlo was downsized in 1978 along with the rest of General Motors’ mid-size cars. The styling was altered again in 1981 with a sleeker, more aerodynamic look that accounted for sales of 895,000 units in the next eight years. The 1987 run was the last full year, with the 1988 season being abbreviated as GM was retiring its rear-wheel drive intermediates in favor of front-wheel-drive. Of 112,000 Monte Carlos sold in 1987, more than 1 out of every 4 were the SS model like this one. The Aerocoupe saw just 6,000 copies and was gone after that.

Like most luxury and performance cars of the 1980s, powerful engines were a thing of the past. The ’87 Monte relied on a 305 cubic inch V8 that was rated at 180 hp SAE net. And a 4-speed automatic transmission was as sexy as that got. Though a two-owner automobile, the second owner (and we assume the seller) has had it for 32 years and appears to have babied it along the way. It has all the creature comforts you would expect for this class of automobile.

We’re told that no modifications have been made except to add American Racing wheels and a Flowmaster exhaust system (which is brand new). Cash isn’t the only way to acquire this looker. The seller is willing to trade for a hot rod, truck (also hot rod), or a muscle car. So, if you have something worth a similar amount of coin, hit the seller up and see what you two can cook up.

This is my preferred setup, with the 60/40 split bench and driver’s side 6-way power seat. It makes for a more comfortable drive. After all – these are cruisers, not bruisers.

It’s actually a 40/60, which seems kind of strange?

I’m guessing 165k on the mileage. Very nice indeed, but parts of the engine compartment make me think the mileage is higher. And zoom in on pic 17 to see the cracks in the vinyl at the edge of the seat, and there are cracks/tears in the door seal. What do you think?

Unfortunately for the seller, there are some undesirable aspects of this car that will hurt the price. With all due respect to Big_Fun’s comment above, the bench seat and column shift are generally a big price deduction for most of the folks looking for these cars. The aftermarket wheels and added on lower stripe are also detriments. There are a lot of guys (& gals) looking for a good clean G-Body, but I doubt it will bring the money being asked for here, due to the mentioned factors. I would definitely assume the odometer has rolled over based on the overall condition. These are sharp lookers, but performance requires upgrades, and most of the folks wanting to upgrade performance will want the floor shifter and buckets.

I had an every option 1988 model, which was an 87, with a different VIN. Production on these beautiful cars ended in Dec. 1987. Mine was Claret with matching interior, buckets. The buckets were very comfortable. Like a dummy, I sold mine in 1993 for $9,300. The guy I sold it to still has it. I must have detailed that car once a month and never used it in rain or snow.
