K-Car Woody: 1986 Chrysler Turbo Town and Country Wagon

Often, when I write these, I have a strong urge to buy the vehicle myself. I can’t explain why on this one, except that it is exactly as the seller says it is: a time capsule. That, and I owned one of the first Plymouth Voyagers with the logs on the side, and I loved it. The story is that the original owner bought this Turbo Wagon for his wife, who drove it only 1500 miles before becoming ill and, unfortunately, passing away. After that, it sat in a climate-controlled Chrysler dealership for 30 years. The rest of the story is in the ad for you to peruse. It is available here on Facebook Marketplace, marked down to $18,900, and is in Cumming, Georgia. Thanks to Rocco B for this great wagon tip!

This Woody’s powerplant is a turbocharged Chrysler 2.2-liter four-cylinder. The 2.2 was built at the Trenton, Michigan, engine plant and, with the turbo option, produced 146 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque. Believe it or not, Hot Rod Magazine touted the Chrysler OHC 2.2-liter in August 1986 as being at the forefront of small-engine technology. The seller replaced the tires, brakes, belts, and fluids when they purchased it to make it roadworthy. The transmission is a Chrysler TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic.

With fewer than 4,000 miles on the odometer, the interior looks like it could be right off the showroom floor. The front bench and 2nd-row seats are covered in 1980s-era gray Chrysler Corporation cloth. The ad photos show no wear. With the middle seat folded down, you get a decent-sized loading area. Not that I think you would want to haul anything in something this nice besides a picnic lunch. The seller also replaced the original radio with a Sony Bluetooth hands-free phone unit because of Georgia’s no-cell-phone-in-hand law. The Chrysler Air-Temp AC is still blowing cold air.

The ad says that Museums are welcome. And, while I would love to see this sitting in the Henry Ford Automotive section in Dearborn, I agree with the seller that it should be enjoyed. Originally listed for $25,900 17 weeks ago and recently reduced to $18,900 on Facebook, the seller says it is going to Hemmings next, and they are entertaining serious inquiries only. Looking up prices for this particular car is not difficult, but finding one for sale is.  Prices shown are less than this asking price. However, I doubt that the mileage on anything that has sold like this was as low as this beauty. Are you nostalgic for the fake wood of the 80’s or just want to recapture that K-Car look and feel?

  1. Kevin Roy – in the time you have written this finely penned article, you could have bought this by now.
I think you could offer significantly less and buy this car. Just be prepared to be a long term owner.
In reality, this is a neat car that could be shown at a Radwood event, a Mopar event and even a concours feature on wagons, the 80’s both. Nothing ‘wood’ surprise me.

Big_Fun and Scotty, I have too many cars already! Although, if the right first gen Mustang shows up you never know.

  2. Turbocharger is icing on the cake for this luxury Wagon.

Nice one, Kevin, and great find again, Rocco! I’m surprised that this car doesn’t have the Mark Cross leather package, it looks like a top model otherwise.

Watch those urges, Kevin! Some of us have fallen into that trap and ended up with storage unit after storage unit of vehicles of all types. Not that it’s a bad thing, until it’s time to pay the storage fees, insurance, license fees, and then sell them, often at a loss… I mean, otherwise, it’s fun! Ha.

Wow!!! This is a true time capsule. As much as it would be nice to see it preserved in a museum, it’s nice to be able to take it out for a weekend spin too. I actually like the cloth seats.

Ripping put the radio was a huge mistake! I hope they left it such that the old radio can be reinstalled!

    Really cool other than that.
