K-Code Fastback: 1965 Ford Mustang Project

This 1965 Mustang Fastback began its life with the howling K-Code 289 under the hood. It is now a genuine blank canvas that is just begging for the right person to help it to relive its glory days. It will take some work, but the next owner could find themselves the proud owners of a pretty special classic. It is located in Castalia, Ohio, and has been listed for sale here on eBay. It has attracted an incredible 37 bids to this point. This has pushed the price along to $7,999, and the reserve hasn’t been met.

This Mustang is a case of “what you see is what you get.” The vehicle comes with all of its hanging panels attached. It looks like most of these are in reasonable to good condition. It sits on casters, as there is no drivetrain. The front fender on the driver’s side has been radiused at some point, but a replacement is included in the sale. There is rust to address, but it is, surprisingly, quite minimal. There might be a little bit in the rear frame rail on the driver’s side, and there is also some present in the floors. The trunk pan and rear wheel housings also have rust and will probably need to be replaced.  However, the rest of the car appears to be structurally sound. There is no trim or chrome to speak of, and while most of the glass is present, the windshield is badly cracked.

While there is no drivetrain to speak of with the Mustang, a few parts are included with the car. As well as a replacement front fender, there are a couple of rust panels. The rest of the gear is things like steering arms, bushes, and brake components. I think that there is a set of new brake drums, along with wheel cylinders. The original quick ratio steering box is also there, although its condition is unknown. Make no mistake, though, because the shopping list for this one will be very long before this job is completed.

We will probably have some readers scratching their heads and wondering why bidding has been so intense on this car. The first reason is that it is a Mustang, and they will always generate plenty of interest. The second is that it appears that it has tags and a clean title, which is always a plus. This is a bodyshell that is not beyond salvation. I won’t argue that it will take some work to return it to its best, but it could be justified from a financial perspective. The alternative would be to source a replacement shell from someone like Dynacorn. Sure, you’d be starting any project with a completely rust-free shell, but you would be paying $18,500 for the privilege. If this Mustang sells for somewhere around its current level, that leaves a lot of room to move on restoring the sheet-metal before its viability comes into question. Something tells me that with that thought in mind, there might still be a little way to go on this auction.

This makes me want to put my running, driving, suspension and engine restored 64 1/2 convertible on the market at some insane price… It’s not a K code fastback but you can drive it home!

The guy talks about a dynacorn body- you are buying a most rotten shell here. You would need a parts car. This rustang is not for the faint of heart. Good luck, you will need it along with a tetanus shot. IMHO not much going for it except the paperwork. Stay safe.

It is what it is. Somebody will spend money that others can’t imagine.
What interests me with this body is the rear brake cooling duct holes just behind doors. What models got these from the factory. I thought it was only Shelbys that got them.
There is a mustang body in a lot in my neighborhood here in Bklyn stored outside that has them. It is in about the same condition as this one being offered. Body only, not even front fenders. I dream of talking owner into letting me take the body off his hands. We can all dream can’t we?
