K-Code Fastback: 1966 Ford Mustang

This 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback has already been bid up to $12,900 and there is still 4 days left in the auction here on eBay. The prior owner bought the car in 1972, stripped it down in 1980, painted the body poorly and then left it untouched. The seller states that the K code high performance 289 engine has never been apart.

Buyers who opted for the K code 289 cubic inch V8 engine were rewarded with 271 horsepower compared to the A code 289 cubic inch engine which produced 225 horsepower with a 4 barrel carburetor. There were two other engines offered including the C code 289 cubic inch engine that produced 200 horsepower with a 2 barrel carburetor and a 200 cubic inch straight six that generated 120 horsepower. The K Code 289 had 10.5 to 1 compression ratio and upgraded internal components.

The interior of the Mustang has been stripped out and the floorboards have been patched. There is lots to like about this car including that it was originally red, with a tan interior and a 4 speed manual transmission. The seller does not have the original distributor which was unique to the K Code 289 engine. The car is sitting awkward and may also need some suspension work.

The seller appears to be flipping the car and it has already met its reserve.  Bidding may get heavy for such a clean car that is ready for restoration. There are 215 people watching this auction.  Are you one of them?

Without looking at this stang this could be a good car to restore. I like the color combo.

What’s with the left front wheel? I remember these had rusted shock towers, or suspension stubs, making it sag like that. IDK, you’ll have $20g’s into this easy. Considering what these go for, I suppose that’s a deal.

Better look this one over well, as there are few pics.the guy may have taken out the front springs to move it around, could be the cause of the lean, I’m not an expert on the 271 hp, but from what I can see it has the big harmonic balancer, but he says the dist isn’t original. cant see if its got the right exhaust manifolds. its in ohio so buyer beware. Might surprise us but proceed with caution!
    Cheers

Looks like it might originally have been “Emberglow,” not red. Makes the crappy paint job a little sadder.

Looks like a C code motor with screw in rocker studs.
    Need the whole VIN!

JBD, I’m curious what leads you to think it is a C-code as that’s what I have in my Mustang. Thanks.

The rear seat picture shows the extra panel and hardware for the dual exhaust, so could be an authentic GT but the rest is such a mess. 66 hubcaps instead of styled steel wheels. Should have front disc brakes and larger master cylinder as well as fatter sway bar. Probably would still not be able to break even on the investment.

While the engine tag is for a ’66 Mustang K-code I would like to see the body plate to authenticate what this is.

Says red but not which red, Candy Apple or Signal Flare. Car is currently Vintage Burgundy.

Says tan interior, which I guess means Parchment, but no indication of which Parchment combination.

Would really like more and better pics too.

Hello, My car we are talking about here.
It is not a GT, bare bones, no options at all.
Was original Candy apple red, Parchment std. interior.
The springs are out of the front, that’s why it is sitting the way it is. Towers are very nice. No rust in them, no holes cut to reach grease fittings.
Hipo motor has never been apart, and turns over nicely by hand.
Correct original exhaust manifolds, carb, intake, water pump, flywheel, balancer, 19 and 21 heads, and hipo fan.
Original BX trans still has the ink stamps under all the grease, original shifter.
Floor has the typical 1980’s repairs, and to do correctly will need a one piece floor installed. Front aprons are very nice, with VIN clearly stamped on both sides. Yep, it needs it all to do it correctly, and it’s worth doing correctly!
If you would like to talk more about it, you can find my number in the auction,
    Thanks for posting.

      Thanks, Brian.
Can you post a good pic of the body data plate in your listing?
      I have a ’66 C-code/auto. hardtop and have an interest in adding a K-code/4-sp. 2+2.
      Thanks again and GLWS.

A few visable engine parts unique to HP289s: altenator – large pulley; right exhaust manifold visable just enough indicating HP; Autolite 4100 4 bbl. Manual Choke (very hard to find); the large harmonic balancer; and if you look carefully at bottom of the visable valve spring you’ll see a cast in pocket providing stability along with the screw in rocker studs. Certainly don’t understand why the VIN plate isn’t broken down in the listing.
