Last Year RWD: 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix

General Motors sold a boatload of personal luxury cars in the 1980s, including the Pontiac Grand Prix. But these were rear-wheel-drive automobiles that liked gasoline, so front-wheel drive was the way of the future. Enter the seller’s 1987 Grand Prix from the G-body platform’s last year in this configuration. We don’t know much about the vehicle other than the seller says it’s “turnkey.” Located in a garage in Menasha, Wisconsin, this survivor is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $8,500. It’s a tip from Lothar… of the Hill People.

With a downsizing in 1978, the Grand Prix didn’t miss much of a beat and went off selling another million units in the next decade. General Motors’ leader in the personal luxury segment was the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, which had an even better showing. The ’87 Grand Prix was a retread of the ’86, but only sold 16,500 units before the RWD body was shut down. Three engine choices were provided, and none of them was Pontiac-built. They included the Buick 3.8-liter V6, a Chevrolet 4.3-liter V6, or a Chevy 5.0 L V8.

Photos and details are few with this Pontiac. We’re told it’s a two-owner vehicle, but which of the aforementioned engines sits under the hood isn’t mentioned. The odometer reads 90,000 miles, but the images don’t exactly speak “turnkey”. The paint looks rather faded, and the driver’s side seat has a worn spot that’s only going to get worse if not attended to. The machine has an automatic transmission, and we doubt many (if any) of the ’87 Grand Prix’s had anything different.

With RWD Grand Prix production winding down in 1987, it’s not surprising that the slow-selling 2+2 had already been discontinued. You’ll recall that’s the one with the protruded rear glass designed to help drivers in NASCAR. If this Pontiac has a V8, it would be the last time a Grand Prix would have a V8 until 2005. We hope the seller’s car is a good one, but just a single exterior photo of the body doesn’t help.

Given the depth of the fan shroud, I’d venture this GP is equipped with the V6.

Yes, this looks like the 4.3 FI V6. Not a bad engine, but not too exciting. It’s based on the Chevrolet 350 (bore and stroke) with 6 cylinders.
Interior looks just like the 1986 2+2 , and research shows there are replacement covers available. The current ‘sale’ price is $850. Yikes…

look like it could be a 4.3v6. i have no access to f/b but this looks quite dirty. no buckets and console. i think 8500.00 ask is being real hopeful. would be lucky to get 1/2 that. too many negatives for the 85

    Ad says “serious people only.”

Seller, how about you get serious, roll it out in the light, stand way back, and take some decent pics? Maybe write a line or two of description. Instead of lecturing the few folks who might do you the favor of messaging you even though your ad is a low effort waste of time?

Low budget Gran Prix and one of the main reasons Pontiac shut down. When I worked in a Pontiac dealership back in the 80s we had nothing to sell except TransAms. The GPs looked great but would get out of their own way. This plain Jane needs better photos and explanations for the running gear, It appears to me to be a V6.
I did see one some time back with a 455 and 4 speed. Now that would be a fine ride. LOL. Naturally it wasn’t stock.
