Louisiana Lot: Collection Wind-Down

There are days when I imagine it’s a burden to own a lot of cars. Especially if you’ve been collecting for many years and maybe want to downsize. I don’t know the motivations, but there’s a collection of parts cars and projects for sale in Louisiana here on craigslist said to belong to one man without a telephone or Internet access who wants to clear some land of classics.

It’s hard to tell just how bad some of the cars are (well, with the exception of some that are just front or rear clips of cars – that’s pretty self-explanatory), and whether the rust has become terminal. This Firebird is 1 of 3 that are up for grabs.

This Chevy Biscayne may not be super desirable, but it at least looks like it was stored a bit more carefully than the other cars. The 2-tone paint job may or may not be original, but it still looks plenty attractive, even on flat tires. It also appears to be the oldest car in a collection of primarily ’60s and ’70s vehicles.

In what has to be the most random car in the yard, there’s a ’79 Mercedes-Benz 450SL rotting away in the leaves. Likely good for nothing but parts at this point, the top at least looks intact so perhaps there’s a clean interior up for grabs. But really, if you’re in the Louisiana area, this yard is a better bet for some domestic muscle than an old German convertible.

Other cars at the property include:

  • 1969 Camaro RS-SS
  • 1971 Chevelle Malibu
  • 1965 Chevelle
  • 1967 Camaro
  • 1969 Pontiac LeMans/GTO
  • 1968 El Camino
  • 1967 Camaro
  • 1969 Camaro RS
  • 1967 Camaro
  • 1967 Firebird
  • 1971 Firebird
  • 1972 Chevelle Malibu
  • 1969 SuperSport Camaro
  • 1967 Rally Sport Camaro
  • 1970 Firebird

I’d like to have gotten the 68 el camino a few years ago, before it deteriorated to such a sad state. Looks like if he does not sell this stuff now, there will be nothing left to sell due to rapid decomposition!

He has some cool cars but they look like junk. Parts at best.

That is sooo common in Louisiana! I lived there twenty (20) years, and it took me a good part of August 2000 to clear close to a dozen MGBs and associated parts out before (a divorce and) a move to Ohio.

Notice the unfinished portion of the house__and the vine that’s grown nearly to the top__that’s EVEN MORE common!

While working for a company in Lafayette, LA, I once had a job take me to Bastrop; I asked my boss where it was, as I’d never heard of it: his words, and I quote, were, “if you were facing north and fell down, your hair would land in Arkansas.” Okay, so 5-6 hours up (mid 90s, before I-49 was completed), work a couple hours to assess the situation, then work/drive home the next day.

But the best part, was stumbling onto Charles Wright’s body & race shop! He used to be a Mopar dealership back in the 60s, and there were still NUMEROUS unsold, totally original Dodges, Plymouths and Chryslers lined up out front and alongside. Plus dozens of “late model” dirt track cars. I must’ve caught him at the right time, as he gave me the Nickel-tour of the place (next trip a month or so later, he wasn’t as friendly…). http://www.autocenterbastrop.com/

Bastrop eh, haven’t thought of that town in years!

I just stumbled across this website and this posting. I thought, wow…that looks familiar. I took all those pictures and the best cars aren’t even shown. We have since SOLD over half the cars listed here to folks who have already or are in the process of restoring them. Also of note, oddly enough, my father Gary Stout worked for CHARLES WRIGHTS BODY SHOP for 46 years until his death… I know that place well too.

Junk yard, with mostly just some panels and bits or wheels worth using for somebody’s restoration. The M-B is probably too far gone to be worth saving, and the ’58 Chevy is only a 4-door probably with the 6.
