Low-Mile 4-Speed: 1979 Camaro Z28

Pat L. has brought this 1979 Camaro Z28 to our attention. It is reported to have 46,291 original miles and has quite a few upgrades in addition to the its number matching engine and 4 speed transmission. The car is located in Algonquin near Chicago, Illinois and can be seen here on Craigslist. The seller is asking $14,000.

The black cloth interior looks very nice and looks very original. The car does not have air conditioning so the vents in the dash are blocked off. The best thing is seeing the 4 speed shifter protruding from the console. the car is reported to have only had 3 owners since new. The windows and locks are operated manually. The seller provides numerous pictures and it appears to be a rust free Z28.

The car has been modified with a Performance Suspension kit including KYB shocks, coil overs and larger sway bars. Fitted with the factory 3:73 rear end, this car should move pretty good. The car’s brakes have been modified to include rear disc conversion too. For freer breathing, the engine was treated to ceramic coated Hedman Headers and true dual exhaust. The engine was upgrade with an aluminum manifold and Holley carburetor.  All the factory parts are included if you want to put it back to stock.

Now for the only downside that I see. The paint has a large chip in the hood and is checkered in several places. While the car looks good, the paint is said to be original but the passenger quarter looks to be a different shade of red compared to the front half.  The seller discloses that this panel has been repainted but the matching is way off.  All that said, he is only asking $14,000 so I would say this is a screaming deal!

I’m not a big fan of these late 70’s Camaros ,but something about this one is appealing.
It looks like the one that Ryan Gosling jacks in The Nice Guys.

If you had this car in 1979 you were the man. Back in the day you installed a set of TRW flat-top pistons, LT-1 heads, crane cam, intake and headers along with the 373 gears this combo made (for the time) a fairly fast machine.

It has one option I like and one that was not checked off, 4 speed and no t-tops! This is one Z28 that can’t be missed in the road.

The manual makes all the difference in these. Performance was pretty lackluster, but with the 4 speed, they were tons of fun to drive. When I worked at the dealer, we would love to see these come in. Unfortunately only about one of ten had the manual.

Typical F body “be on the lookout” comments, framerail rust behind the rear wheels, saggy doors, bondo quarters. This one looks much better than average. I like it and the money isn’t outrageous. Lack of ac probably is easier in Chicago than FL.

These used to be all over lemon lots, but getting tougher to find. Could be a lot of fun for the money, and as Arthell64 says, pretty easy to breathe some performance into the mill.

Looks good and I think the asking price is reasonable.

Darn nice looking car the 4 speed is cool and the lack of T tops is exceptional! Depending on hidden rust it’s a decent deal to say the least!

Being in Chicago, go inspect for rust in person. Looks nice, and if as solid as it appears, a great buy. Loads of fun with this one!
