The ZJ era of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was a time in which the company’s long-serving SUV matured to new levels. It was no longer just a highly usable 4×4 that people could ride in, as it evolved to reflect changing consumer mindsets about what an SUV should be. New levels of creature comforts and higher-end trims began to define the Grand Cherokee experience, and while these handsome rigs once dotted the landscape, nice ones are increasingly hard to find. This 1997 Laredo listed here on craigslist has just 63,000 miles and appears quite clean inside and out, with an attractive black leather interior.

The seller claims to be the second owner and is asking $9,000. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Barney for the tip. When it comes to assessing whether a vehicle is truly low mileage, I trust the interior condition more than anything. You can have a car that’s low mileage but has been righteously abused, and the interior will tell the story. Plenty of owners prioritize the exterior condition above everything else, and ripper leather and broken switches tell you that their attention to detail was limited. The Cherokee looks fantastic inside, and while creases on the leather are unavoidable, the rest of the materials look fantastic, from the dash plastics to the steering wheel, and shockingly, the arm rest which appears to have never been used.

Under the hood is a reliable and powerful 318 V8, good for a still-respectable 220 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This is one of those engines that will keep going and going, at least until you decide to stop putting oil in it. The seller reports that it’s “….all set up for flat towing and also has a tow hitch” which tells me this Cherokee spent much of its life behind a motorhome. I am never certain whether this is good or bad news: obviously, it was used solely for in-town errands once the RV was parked, so it’s life was quite gentle, but all those years behind a benehouth like that had to have led to some road rash on the front panels.

Of course, there’s not much to worry about up front aside from the chrome grill. Plastic bumpers just need some dressing to restore the original finish, and it looks like the headlights haven’t been damaged. The seller doesn’t tell us much else about the truck’s cosmetics, but the clean interior should inspire plenty of confidence. I also like seeing the optional alloy wheels, which transformed the appearance of any ZJ lucky enough to wear them. This is the kind of buy that will likely appreciate over the coming years while you use it every day and keep the mileage below 85,000.

These are comfortable, and very reliable for 200-300,000 miles. I wish I could buy it.
That was quick.
I have worked on Jeeps since 1993 and the first generation Grand Cherokees are I beleive the better ones from 1993-1998. The 1998 was also the only year for the 5.9 360 engine .There was still the 5.2 and the 4.0 engines too.
from the pics in this story it looks like it may have possibly been drug around by a motor home from the light connector in the front. so, whatever that odometer says most likely wrong. these do have a following. it’s a jeep thing
