Low Mileage Driver: 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

The Mercedes-Benz R107 chassis lineup is slowly becoming a borderline blue-chip collector’s item. For many years, the sheer volume of available used two-seater Mercedes roadsters made it seem like you never had to rush out to buy the first one you saw, and that’s still the case – but the best cars have slowly begun to creep up in value and low-mileage specimens are worth a pretty penny. This 1988 560SL listed here on eBay has under 90,000 miles but the color and driver-quality condition will likely keep the price reasonable in this no reserve listing.

When I say “driver”,  I don’t mean to infer this 560SL is tatty; far from it. The car is clean with excellent shut lines and laser-straight panels. The gold coloring is a popular shade from the 1980s, but it is one of the less desirable colors you could order your two-seater Benz in in 1988. Signal red, black, dark blue – all of these shades will likely net you more value on the selling side, but if you can live with tan, buying an R107 for a discount in this color makes a lot of sense.

The leather interior is in very good condition, certainly in keeping with the reasonable mileage on the clock. Of course, Mercedes-Benz products from this era are generally durable when it comes to interior materials, but this one still has a few issues here and there. The cracked dashboard is the biggest, and there’s no solution for that beyond replacing it with a crack-free one. The seller lists a few other flaws, including a leaking exhaust, a crack in the soft top, and a blemish in the paint on the hood.

The listing notes the 560SL was stored in a barn for a few months at a time when not in service, so that helps explain why it doesn’t have over 100,000 miles on the clock. The R107 is likely destined to be one of the more sought-after models from the 1980s, but high production numbers should make it easy to find a decent one for many years to come. With this clean 560SL listed at no reserve, it seems likely someone is going to walk away with a great summer driver.

Considering the “book” retail on this and considering the way insurance companies operate and factoring the price of new Mercedes parts… could have been a broken tail light!

I wouldn’t call this 560SL a low mileage car. My 1986 560SL is a 63,000 mile car, and I have seen several examples of yet even lower mileage. So can we please have some honesty in advertising? It’s not a lot to ask.
