Low Mileage T-Top: 1985 Ford Mustang GT

Like many performance-oriented vehicles, clean examples of a “Fox Body” Ford Mustang are becoming rather hard to find. The seller of this 1985 Mustang GT offered here on eBay acknowledges this, noting that they found this pristine example after coming across plenty of ‘Stangs that were “rusted, twisted, beaten up, or way too modified.”

This almost completely original Mustang GT is available in Valrico, Florida with a clean title. A noteworthy fact is that this model has a T-Top roof, which was only available until 1988.

Amazingly, this sports car has only traveled 28,950 miles during its lifetime, and it looks like it. Whether it’s the exterior, interior or engine bay, every area of the vehicle is in remarkable shape. Though there are no photos of it, the seller claims the undercarriage is also in great shape, and also notes that they can provide photos of any specific areas of the vehicle.

Under the hood, there’s a carbureted 5.0-liter V8 engine, which pairs to a manual transmission to drive the rear wheels. As expected, this Mustang runs and drives with no issues at all. It also seems that the only modification to this ride is a Cherry Bomb exhaust system installed by the previous owner.

At the time of writing this article, the price stands at $7,100 with no reserve. The seller claims this Mustang needs nothing except a caring owner who will treat it as a Sunday driver. Would you take on this Foxbody, or is the T-Top roof a deal breaker?

Beautiful car, would look great parked next to my more modified 83 capri rs in the garage. The rocker panel mouldings and front valance are not stock. Look like Cervinis units. I’m pretty sure the reverse scoop on the hood is from an 84. I don’t think 85’s had them. I wouldn’t have added that stuff, but I wouldn’t remove it from such a clean car either. Probably been on the car since the early 90’s anyway.

Those tailights look incorrect too…SVO had the black pinstripes on them.
      Nice clean car though.

Yes, the hood scoop, taillights, headlight covers, and all of the lower grey area is not original. Still a pretty car. I have an 84 SVO and a 86 GT convertible myself.

I would question the miles. Car has a 140 mph speedo. They came with 85 mph speedo.

    THE VEHICLE REPORT SAYS 42k

This one has alot of questions, but if resolved would be a neat car with the T-tops. Most troubling is the replaced speedometer, unless this Mustang has a lot of documentation to back up the low mileage claim, be wary. The wrap on the steering wheel is a warning sign as well. With a purported 28K miles, the steering wheel should be near perfect, obviously, whoever looks at the car can peel off the wrap for confirmation. As Ricky mentions above, the vehicle report say 42K…….better check.

As for the bottom gray paint, you could order it that way back in ’85. It would be smart to order the Marti report before purchase to confirm if the gray was original to the car. Hood change looks just goofy. Obviously, you can remove the headlight covers as well.

Do your due diligence on this one and see what comes up! Good luck.

Jesus that thing is clean. I’m usually a skeptic but bought correctly I’m not sure how much the miles matter. The wear on the seat, armrests, etc., would lead me to believe it’s a lower mileage version that would be a fun car to have as long as it stays under $10k. Yes, due diligence is warranted but it always is in the collector car industry BUT this is cheap fun currently at a decent price. Now, my opinion changes if this thing gets much over $10k as that’s where you have to have real documentation on miles, original equipment configuration, etc., in order to justify the price. Have owned 4 or 5 of these (depending on whether you count racecars or not) and the street cars were all good fun and nice cars for everyday use or weekend cruising. Even had one of the 85 LX throttle body 5.0 convertibles for a couple of years which I’d guess today would be a rare find.

The 85MPH Speedometer was changed to a 140 MPH speedometer which would mean that the odometer would have had to be disassembled and adjusted for the correct miles. Either way messing with any odometer is illegal. [Buyer Beware].

I remember those headlight covers from the ’80s. They cleaned up many a ‘non-aero’ headlight assembly when we were still stuck with standard sealed beam headlights.

I had a fascinating conversation with a retired Ford engineer a few years ago who told me that his son invented a number of those covers in the mid ’80s in their basement. They placed some ads in some of the car magazines and orders flowed in a lot faster than they anticipated and pretty soon the whole family was involved in their production!

Somehow it never occurred to me that Mustang T-Tops went away after 1988. Learn something new every day…

Wow. Pretty clean all around – I like the look and the color.. All the stuff “wrong” with it I like. All depends where it ends up but right now it looks pretty cheap. I’m guessing, given the aftermarket pulleys is that it needed a 140 mph speedo, certainly something that displayed more then 85 anyway.

If the vehicle report says 42k it must have read that at some time. So plus the 28k you can assume at least 70k. That 140 speedo has been available from Ford Motorsports since the car was new. So my guess is it was put in early in the cars existence after at least 42k was already on it. The condition of the car is great so I would take it for what it is and disregard any mileage claims. It’s more than 28k, but I doubt it’s 200k either. The 140 speedo is actually a bonus as those are not easy to find or cheap! Unless it’s just an overlay.

I think the T-top makes it even more desirable.
I’m currently in process of building a ’93 coupe.original 4 cyl. Auto car that’s in mint shape. Believe it was a municipal vehicle of some sort.
It’s getting a 351 Windsor, 6 point roll cage and back seat delete package.
    All hail the foxbodymustang!
