Yellow with a black stripe is one of the best color combinations out there, in my opinion, and makes even a mighty project like this 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 look tempting. There’s not a lot to work with here, and that includes the listing itself. However, there could be a decent project lurking underneath if frame and body rot isn’t significant. The starting bid is $9,999 here on eBay with no reserve.
Thanks to Barn Finds reader Patrick S. for the find. Pictures aren’t great and we’ve tried to pick the best ones offered in the listing. The body is a mixture of faded, sunburnt paint and what looks like some evidence of filler. The seller doesn’t explain whether the panels are original or if there’s any evidence of prior accident damage. The Mustang is located in Missouri, so rust shouldn’t be a huge issue like it would be up north or in a wet southern location.
The lack of a headlight bucket gives the impression that the nose is tweaked, but I suspect it’s an optical illusion. There’s no motor or transmission, which is a shame given the seller indicates it’s a manual car. However, the lack of a Marti report doesn’t do anything to confirm whether it left the factory with a 4-speed, and those sorts of details may actually help with a mild basketcase like this Mustang. If it’s an original yellow/black car with a manual gearbox, that could be worth restoring.
Interior pictures aren’t much better, but it does appear to show a real hodge-podge of a cabin with the steering wheel removed, part of the dash missing, and a collapsed column. While this is a bigger project than I’d want to take on, I’m sure a Mustang enthusiast could see the potential in bringing back a real-deal Boss 302 car, even if the end result is a non-matching example. Would you restore a car like this?
I thought all 1970 Boss 302 cars came only with a 4 speed from the factory ?
The G in the fifth digit of the VIN proves it is a factory built BOSS 302, thus a 4 speed. The ad is horribly written, and the seller didn’t do himself any favors by not taking better pictures or waiting for a Marti report. The car is rough, but someone might gamble on it either as a viable restoration project or VIN donor.

All Boss Mustangs had manual transmissions. ’69-71 used a 4-speed, 2012-13 used a 6-speed.
Boss 302, really? Could be some front fenders from an old junk yard. Lets see a VIN.
The rear quarters don’t have scoops. Not definitive proof, but not as simple to fake as bolting on a front clip.
I do believe that the 1970 models didnt have the quarter panel scoops, where as the ’69 models did. Nothing to do with it being a Boss or not.

1970 Mustang ‘sportsroofs’ , is what Ford called them . (Better known as fastbacks) didn’t have quarter scoops. 1969 Boss 302’s didn’t have quarter scoops either, but all other ’69 ‘fastbacks’ did. If anyone is experienced in Boss 302’s and looking at these pictures, they can be pretty sure it is a real Boss. The wrap around shock towers would be one clue. The black paint coming through on the deck lid.That would be another clue. The G code VIN is a pretty big clue. So, without looking at the car in person, I would say this is a Boss 302. I have a 1970 Boss 302 and have owned a few in the past.
All you need to see is the letter in the VIN that designates the original engine, which was provided in the ad.

I’m more surprised all the pictures are rightside up. My guess is that people use their smart phone to take multiple pictures of everything, never bothering to get a decent, well framed angle or edit any of the pictures. They then download everything off the phone and you get this mess. Definitely Craig’s List quality photos.

It has the reinforced shock tower bracing so that’s a good indicator it’s a Boss. Only the Boss 302 and 438CJ/SCJ cars had them.
It amazes me how poor some people are at taking acceptable pics and providing even basic info.

VIN donor, was a Boss 302, can’t save them all. Will become a tribute and hopefully a scammer doesn’t get a hold of it. Don’t think the paperwork is worth the asking price.

It happens all the time . About twenty years ago I worked with a guy that restored a 57 Skyliner . One of his parts cars had not only a lower production number, but also a higher optioned car . He swapped vins and rebuilt the good one to be a copy of the parts car .
This is also why people pay good money for a rare car that’s a complete junker , just to get the vin and rebuild a base car into the rare model. I remember on Ebay a few years ago someone paid around 10 grand for a 69 Camaro that was extremely rare , but was quite literally a mangled empty shell down in embankment .There was nothing left of the car but the ID plates. I’m sure some stock Camaro was restored using the plates from that wreck.
Yup vin doner for sure especially since the original engine is gone ! Seen my share of rustangs and this isn’t worth it for 10g !

Dale Faught had one in 1972-73, loved double dating to the high school football games in that Boss 302 stick shifter > it was expensive back then too, $ 2100.00 bucks. The one listed here is absurd.
i do alot of vin donor cars and this would be a good one to sacrifice for a clean body car also kinda like all those tail lights
GTABERT look at code us code511-b-2-b and if ya do your build and your home work correct yes you are able to do vin donor cars just like the rest of us legally…same as with motorboats and motorcycles i live in ohio which is one of the most stingey of them all when it comes to vin donor type vehicles and there paper work
Everybody talking about v.i.n. transfers…. What about these “car shows” on television that take nothing but a firewall(namely Mopar scammer on Graveyard cars) building a car around it? What’s the difference or a Dynacorn body being used to rebuild a pile of junk… They never mention this on these shows we seem to have coming out of the woodwork… Just saying….
I am by no means an expert, but I believe transferring vin #’s is illegal. I used to own a used car lot & I would have NEVER considered swapping vin #’s for any reason. If you want to build a Dynacorn car, apply for a “homebuilt” vin with your state. If you want to build a clone, keep the original vin & be honest about it. Changing vin numbers, last I knew, was fraudulent. Someone brought up a legal code saying it was legal to do. I honestly have not researched that. So there is a chance that I am LEGALLY wrong. Still, there are things that are morally wrong even if legally acceptable. Yup, this is a former used car dealer talking about morals lol. Creepy, isn’t it?
