LS5 454 Roadster: 1971 Chevrolet Corvette

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1971 Chevrolet Corvette is located in Galion, Ohio. It is said to retain its factory LS5 454 cubic inch V8 engine. As you may remember, the LS5 had hydraulic lifters and was said to be more streetable than the LS6 454 cubic inch V8 engine from Chevrolet. This Corvette is listed here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction. The car is currently bid to $34,800 and the reserve has been met. The car is not perfect but it does have a very desirable drivetrain including a 4 speed transmission.

The black interior looks original even though the car has over 100,000 miles. The original shifter was replaced because a prior owner had arthritis and had a hard time shifting it. The original shifter is still in good shape and goes with the car in the sale. The paint has some chips, scratches and damage to the fiberglass. One thing a new owner might want to change is that the car is not equipped with power steering. My brother had a 1969 Corvette with a big block and no power steering. It was difficult to maneuver in tight spaces.

Under the hood is the LS5 454 cubic inch V8 that was rated at 365 horsepower. It is said to be a matching numbers engine that is backed by a Muncie 4 speed transmission. The engine compartment looks clean and the engine and air cleaner are freshly painted. The LS5 was available in the Corvette, Camaro and Chevelle. It might have also been available in the Monte Carlo so please comment below if you know. The LS5 engine dropped to a 270 horsepower rating in 1972 when GM moved from gross to net horsepower ratings.

Chevrolet offered the 1971 Corvette in two shades of blue. Code 976 was Mulsanne blue and Code 979 was Bridgehampton blue. This Corvette is painted in Mulsanne Blue which was the lighter of the two blues. Production for this color was 2,465 Corvettes in 1971. This car has a few small things to be fixed but it is a great combination of good looks and performance.

When I could finally afford a new Corvette (1978), I couldn’t afford the insurance. Now that I can afford both, I can’t get in and out unless the top’s down! And I hate to admit it, but an automatic with power steering is almost a necessity anymore. I wonder if I can get a Vette kit for my golf cart. But I do have fond memories of hitting the Miami discos (and the Playboy Club) in a 71 T-top.

2 out of 3 isn’t bad for a rookie. Chevrolet NEVER produced a 454 Camaro that rolled off either of the assembly lines …
