Luxury SUV Ancestor: 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer

Jeeps are one of those brands that stand out. Almost everyone around the globe knows the Jeep name, their heritage runs deep. Wait, is that a tag line from a Jeep commercial? This 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer is arguably one of the first “luxury” SUVs and it can be found here on eBay in Midland, Texas. The bids are over $3,100 so far, let’s check it out.

Jeep Super Wagoneer. I’m not sure if a vehicle name can get much better than that, certainly not one of the jumbled, random, alphanumeric, chromed-plastic names that are glued onto vehicles today. The Super Wagoneer was first available as a 1966 model and they were made until 1969. They are considered by many as one of the first luxury SUVs, even though they weren’t referred to as SUVs back then. The Jeep Super Wagoneer is reportedly the first time Jeep used the full-width grille on the Wagoneer.

You can see that this example is in storage and there are no overall photos of it – from what is shown it looks pretty good. There is some rust on it in a few areas but, compared to what might be found in the upper-Midwest or Northeast, this thing looks solid. Hagerty is at $25,900 for a #2 excellent condition Super Wagoneer so a nut-and-bolt restoration is out of the question. If the next owner does most of the work on it, they should be able to keep it under that value.

The sculptured carpet is interesting and the interior will need a lot of work on almost every surface. Once it’s done, though, it’ll be beautiful inside. Air-conditioning was a feature of the Super Wagoneer as was power steering and power brakes, tilt steering and more. The seller gives us exactly fifteen words in the description, three of which are Jeep Super Wagoneer, so only twelve words, really. None of them describe the condition other than “complete” and “motor turns over”.

The motor, or engine, is AMC’s 327 cubic-inch V8 which would have had a healthy 270 hp and 360 ft-lb of torque. 0-60 mph in 9 seconds is a pretty decent clip for 2019 so once this Super Wagoneer is restored it’ll easily keep up with modern traffic. Have any of you heard of the Jeep Super Wagoneer?

I had two of these at one time!! The first was a straight 6 three speed on the column and the othe had a small block with a three speed also!! I guess everyone has regrets and one of mine was selling them!!! They were tanks and had plenty of power even the six!! The manual shift made them fun and not to bad on fuel!!!

RE: “…Not too bad on fuel” in comparison to, say, a fully loaded Deuce And A Half ton military truck..LOL! 😆

That center console and shifter looks like it came out a mid-1960s Rambler.

The seller may not have said anything that isn’t true, but he left out much that is. Sellers who think pictures tell the whole story or that a phrase like “condition is Used” is a sufficient description rankle me. Hopefully the seller is forthcoming when answering questions.

The Jeep does seem to be a good candidate for restoration. I prefer its side trim to the fake wood used on Grand Wagoneers.

That has the bones a great vehicle. First, I had a Rambler with that 327. It was torquey, quiet and smooth as glass. People always thought my car stalled. My uncle has a ’69 Wagoneer. The styling of those 60’s real wagoners…a red steering wheel, fantastic! And That AMB gut is correct! The shifter is pure mid 60’s Rambler!

The late 60s Super Wagoneers are the pinnacle of full size Jeeps. The Haggerty valuation is definitely NOT for a fully restored or restomod example. I’d expect this Wagoneer, in fully restored condition, to fetch more than $30k and possibly as much as $50k.

I’d be very careful of a salt state Jeep Wagoneer. Having worked on and owned several of them from ’72 till 2010. 2 critical points are the floor plans and the frame rail area, fuel tank support.

The ultimate Wagoneer, and the ultimate Jeep. Just missing the optional Vinyl top! One of the rarest too. Only the second one I’ve ever seen for sale. Looks very solid to these New England eyes. Won’ t be easy finding interior or trim parts for it. Pretty sure that carpet is not factory, but its possible. Looks like house carpeting. Too bad interior is so sun damaged.
