Macho 351: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

In the late 1960s, all the automakers were stepping up their game, both in performance and persona. Ford was no exception and – on the Mustang – the GT was on the way out and the Mach 1 on the way in. As is the case of the seller’s car, it’s a Mach 1 with an M-Code engine, signifying a 351 cubic inch V-8 that put out 290 hp. Not that this name change brought any new neck-snapping performance, but the new title sounded a lot more badass! This 1969 Mach 1 isn’t perfect, but it still turns a lot of heads. It’s located in Indianapolis, Indiana and available here on eBay where the reserve has not been met at $26,766.66. Or you can exercise Buy It Now for $36,500.

The Mach 1 was a performance-oriented option package on the Mustang from 1969-78, although it made a brief comeback for 2003-04. The name was borrowed from a concept car called the “Levacar Mach I” at the Ford Rotunda in 1968. It used a cushion of air as propulsion on a circular dais. The Mach 1 only came in the fastback body style, with various visual and performance enhancements like: a matte black hood with pins, hood scoop, competition suspension, chrome pop-open gas cap, revised wheels, chrome exhaust tips, deluxe interior, rear deck spoiler and rear window louvers (called SportSlats).

The seller of this car is trying to be forthcoming with everything he knows about this ‘Stang and has included not one, but two videos of what he hopes will be the car of your dreams. Another car has now taken over his priorities in the form of a 1970 Mach 1 that has come into his possession. While it looks darn nice to us, the seller says the car is not perfect, but a good driver that will take you anywhere.

The body and red paint present very well, although the seller suspects a repaint prior to his ownership. The black interior is largely also a winner, with the only known flaws being an imperfection on the passenger side of the dashboard and the headliner. However, someone with some electrical smarts is going to need to check things out as the headlights, dash lights and turn signals are not working as they should, although the seller hopes to get that fixed prior to a done deal.

We’re told the car runs and drives as good as it looks with 85,000 miles under its belt. The seller believes that the motor carries an aftermarket camshaft, replacement headers (brand unknown) and a MSD ignition has been installed. There’s a small exhaust leak to be sorted out which might be as simple as tightening some bolts. Rather than using a 4-speed manual transmission, this Mach 1 has an automatic to do the job for you.

Sales of the Ford Mustang were still brisk in 1969, although not in the league of the 1965-66 outings. Out of nearly 300,000 Mustangs built that year, more than 72,000 were Mach 1’s, making the Mach 1 the second most popular Mustang body style sold that year. Hagerty projects $50-60,000 is what top- flight versions of this car can go for, and probably more with the Cobra Jet engine. So, it appears the seller’s Buy It Now price leaves some room to spare.     The lights and turn signals should have been fixed prior to kist as the exhaust leak for price asked in my opinion.

    I like the look of the mustang.

    A four speed would have been sweet….

      agreed – no one wants to pay up to solve an electrical gremlin problem as these can be quite painful and require a lot of patience and time. The car has a BIN price as a “100%” and it’s clearly not.

    Price appears decent however I suspect that it is likely that the suspension and many other systems may be due for an overhaul? Oil stain on differential and what appears to be an attempt at Ford red primer over underside rust. Clearly a repaint as evidenced at door jam. Also, is is the poor photography or does that interior look quite shop worn? See the pic of the glove box with dash cracking. Aftermarket radiator and more.

    Shiny paint and chrome aside, this one needs a very thorough examination.

    Great year for Mustangs, they were still not too heavy and had a great look. Have the electrical problems fixed by somebody who does it for a living, hurt your wallet, save you mind and time. It needs some refreshing, but I would rather own this one than the one next to it.

    What a beautiful Mach 1 Somepeople act like judges at a car show and love picking cars apart. Wish I had the cash to buy it. My favorite year Mustang .

      They pick apart the seller more than the car. The car’s condition is what it is, even if a person is wearing rose colored glasses. They are pointing out the several flaws showing that the seller is expecting way too much for a car that for all one knows is a Bondo slap job and paint.

      Buyer beware.

    Looks like a pig in a new dress!! The interior says it all!! Those seats will start to rip the first time you sit on them!! Looks dryer then a pop corn fart!!!
