Magazine Car: 1984 Pontiac Trans Am

This 1984 Pontiac Trans Am is a former magazine feature car that remains in a nicely preserved state with some desirable options. Mileage is a tick below 50,000 and the paint looks quite nice – I especially like the white paint with the contrasting black lower Aero package. The seller purchased the Trans Am with mileage around 20K and despite the increase in odometer readings, it remains in excellent condition. Find it here on eBay with an $18,500 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.

Options make this Trans Am even more appealing, which includes air conditioning, T-tops, and a power antenna. More importantly, it comes with the desirable WS6 suspension package, which included larger sway bars, quicker steering, and four-wheel disc brakes. This example also has the locking rear end and “High-Tech Turbo” wheels. There’s an extensive write-up on this Trans Am on the Hot Rod Network which also discusses how the seller bought the Trans Am following a debilitating work injury.

The gray cloth bucket seats remain in excellent condition, and the Trans Am is also equipped with a map pocket, split-back folding rear seat, cruise control, electronic hatch release, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. There’s not much to complain about inside, other than the automatic not being the preferred transmission of choice, but it doesn’t detract greatly for an excellent summer cruiser like this. The dash displays no flaws, either, and the carpets beneath the floor mats appear to be mint as well.

This Trans Am is equipped with the 5.0L HO L69 engine, which featured an electronically-controlled carburetor paired with actual ram air induction. It was good for a 0-60 run below eight seconds, and the seller added an Edelbrock exhaust using factory-style tips to give it some extra go-power without appearing any less stock. While this is not one of the more desirable Trans Ams, either by virtue of limited production or better performance, it is a nicely kept survivor that will continue to be an easy modern classic to live with – I’m just not sure whether the asking price is in line with the current demand for such vehicles.

This is where I usually say that the price is way too high, but after reading the ad, and looking at the pix, this one just be priced right…and if you can keep this beauty in the same condition, it might even be a decent investment…and 16K cash might get you this one…very nice find…

Among my favorite bodystyles of Trans Am. Never minded that they didn’t have big horsepower. Overpriced? Probably. But maybe not if you love them like I do and have the means like I don’t.

I’m no expert, but I do own one (a 92 convertible-see photo) and this looks like an investment-grade car. I’ve never seen one this clean and original. Mine’s a manual which doubles the fun factor and while a 5-speed in lieu of the automatic would make it that much more desireable, it only detracts from it a small amount. This just looks like a nice honest car.

Could you have ordered this 3rd gen with steel wheels, raised white letter tires, larger/wider tires, chrome pedal dressup, no radio?.
I have seen some 2007 camaros with steel wheels.
Looks like tremendous complexity under the hood, compared to a ’70 with no a/c!
Some have fitted shaker hood scoops to this gen. Google that.
