A huge collection of air-cooled Volkswagens has gone up for sale in Puerto Rico, representing one individual’s fascination with virtually every kind of vintage VW ever made. The seller has partnered with a U.S.-based expert on antique Volkswagens to help wind down the collection, which includes classics like this drag-prepped Beetle that is one of two equipped with highly-modified turbocharged engines. Your eyes go in every direction (if you can appreciate old air-cooled VWs) when scanning the page, which does an excellent job of documenting every car and truck that’s up for grabs. This includes custom movie cars, camper vans, military-spec vehicles, survivors, restored cars, and more, including this Euro-spec 1956 model here on OldBug.com, complete with the trick semaphore turn signals.
Every variety of VW is seemingly here, including several models that were unique to the owner’s location south of the border. That includes models like a 1969 VW Brasilia, as well as a stunning 1971 Puma GT. My personal favorite is a car I’ve long coveted, and if you know of one in the states, please reach out to me. It’s a 1966 Type 3 Ghia, and this one here on OldBug.com is said to be extremely original.
Even the more modern classics are in outstanding condition, like this restored 1982 Vanagon with the Westfalia package. Yes, it is restored, which should ensure it presents as being quite minty, but I just can’t recall the last time I saw a Vanagon that was equal parts correct and clean with all the factory trimmings in place. How expensive is it to have one transported to the continental US, then on to its final destination? It won’t matter for the cream of the crop, however, as the collection gets thinned out shipping costs will matter for the more generic cars.

I have shipped cars to the USVI which is just east of Puerto Rico. $1500 per car.
It should be slightly less going west back to the mainland as the ships are empty going in that direction.
I have been watching this since it hit the market. There are a lot of interesting cars in the collection. Once I win the Mega-Millions tonight, I may just buy them all. HAHA!

Hopefully some of these cars will be bought and brought over – 40 miles by sea – to the USVI to become part of the fantastic VW Club that is active here. VW’s were the car of choice here for many years in the 60’s and 70’s and seeing all the variations out driving on a Sunday Cruise here in St Thomas is a treat!
