Matching Numbers Mustang: 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1969 Ford Mustang is listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Marion, Alabama, it is being sold with a Bill of Sale. Bidding currently sits at $5,501 but the reserve has not been met.

This Mustang looks like a project car that has stalled for some reason, and is waiting for the right person to come along and complete the job. The seller states that this Mustang will require new front floor pans and a new trunk pan. Certainly this photo shows that things are pretty grim on the driver’s side, but we get no indication of whether the passenger side is as bad (or worse). Unfortunately there are no shots showing the underside of this Ford, but the seller states that the frame is solid with no visible rust.

Every cloud has a silver lining. While there appears to be quite a bit of work to do on this Mustang to whip it into shape, the seller is including a nice little cache of original ’69 Mustang parts including fenders, glass, doors, trim, etc. In all there are in excess of 100 additional items included in the sale. Unfortunately the seller doesn’t provide any photos of these, but like any good restoration additional parts never seem to go astray.

The interior is also going to require a fairly substantial list of parts before it gets returned to a respectable state. While the rear seat and associated trim appears to be in decent condition and the dash looks complete, it really looks like virtually everything else will need to be repaired or replaced. The dash pad is quite badly cracked while the carpet, door trims and front seat covers will all need to be replaced.

The car is numbers-matching and mechanically totally original. The 351ci Windsor engine is backed by an automatic transmission. The car is said to run and drive, which is a nice plus given the scope of work that is required elsewhere. I do detect that the engine has received a dose of “rattle-can rebuild” at some stage in the past as blue over-spray is visible in places.

This Mustang is another one of those projects that is not for the faint-hearted. To me it really doesn’t matter that it is not a Boss or a Mach 1. To me it’s just a good, basic Mustang. I hope that it can be restored to its original glory as it is an attractive car. A huge amount (as always with Mustangs) will depend on just how deep the rust really goes. Is anyone willing to guess how high the price will go?

Would it be better to buy a new body in white and transfer the part? This needs a lot of work. What shape is the cowl in? There known to rot out.

Correct Bob! this rustang needs to be gone over well..fixing a rotten cowl on these not for the faint of heart and would consume lots of body shop hours-$$$. I did a 62 falcon wagon only to discover later that the cowl was gone. parts available for this fastback but the amount of work cannot be understated!!!

Good luck to the new owner!

I would like to see a Marti report. This could be the remains if a 1 of ~4800 GT. It has the right hood, and there is the remnants of a rocker panel stripe. Not terribly valuable, but definitely different in a sea of Mach 1s.

No such thing as a “matching numbers” Mustang!! Beware!

Exactly. “Numbers Matching” for a Ford makes no sense at all. WHAT numbers? What do they match?

That is a completely incorrect statement. Starting in 1968 the federal government mandated that all auto manufacturers VIN stamp the engine and transmission. So if the VIN stamped on the engine and transmission in this car match the VIN on the dash tag and the fender apron(s) then it is a numbers matching Mustang.

69 Mustang GT stripes did not extend onto the rocker panels, someone incorrectly added the stripes. See attached Ford documentation.

Stripe placement varied on which Ford plant it originated from. New Jersey, San Jose or Dearborn. Even Boss 302’s differed depending on the plant.
This particular car is correct for a 69 GT, which didn’t sell real well because of the introduction of the Mach 1. Engine options- 351w 2v, 4v, 390, 428 non ram air and 428 ram air shaker. Cool car!

If you look closely there are no hood pins or holes present in the radiator core support, someone added the GT hood and neglected to install hood pins in the core support. How rare the mandatory GT gas cap assembly is also MIA. Funny there is no image posted of the rear valance panel, all 69 GT Mustangs have dual exhaust cutouts in said panel.

No doubt a Marti report will confirm what this is.

      Hi Jeff,
I don’t have documentation other than what I’ve read over the years. I have a lot of books on Mustangs and Fords. I would say either Mustang recognition guide by California Mustangs or Boss & Cobra Jet Mustangs by Dr.John Craft. I do know that dual exhaust was only with the 4 barrel cars. But you’re right , the GT should have a pop open gas cap and hood pins. And ya , a Marti report would verify without a doubt.
