Maybe A Unicorn: 1965 Mustang Coupe

We feature first generation Mustangs a lot here at Barn Finds, and for good reason.  Mustangs are almost the perfect car for a beginning enthusiast on a budget.  Coupes are selling at affordable amounts, these cars are bone simple mechanically, and parts are incredibly plentiful.  Still, finding a good one to start with can be tough.  This 1965 Mustang coupe, being sold on craigslist in Hutchinson, Kansas, may be a great start.  Stored for twenty years in a garage, this pony may be the rust-free unicorn that some beginning collector is looking for, and the $4,500 price seems quite a bargain.  Thanks to Adam C. for this great tip!

As we expect from craigslist ads, there are few words in the description.  In fact, the few words tell us that the car has been in storage for twenty years.  That is it. In the basic information column, we learn that the car is in good condition and that it has a good title and a manual transmission.  We also learn that the car is green.  Most likely the specific color is Ivy Green Poly.

Inside, we see that the manual transmission information is incorrect.  This is a six-cylinder car with an automatic transmission.  We can also see that the seats are in remarkably good condition, and the carpet appears usable.  Of course, a thorough detailing would be in order.  It is also apparent that there is no rust in the door sills.  Just lots of what looks to be drywall dust.

The dim picture above shows that the back seat is also in remarkable condition for the age of the car.  Unless this car was the restroom and dormitory for generations of rodents, the new owner may be able to get by with the original upholstery.

In all, this Mustang looks to be a great buy.  The body looks solid, the interior is likely in good shape, and the drivetrain combination is easy to repair.  As with any Mustang, a thorough inspection of every nook and cranny would be a must.  Mustangs rust in places you will never see with a walk around.  Rust repair isn’t cheap or easy on these.  It just seems that this one might have escaped all of that unpleasantness.

If this car was close to you, would you head over to have a look at it?

The driver’s seat appears to be red and died black. Good price if it’s not rusty and runs.

I disagree about the front seat. all seats were standard BLACK. That somewhat red stripe appears like some kind of weathering or rubbing has made the leather thin. Perhaps it indicates where the “guy” place his arm while the “girl” snuggled. If there was an interior pic of steering wheen with a “neckking knob” my guess would be confirmed.

I might sound like a broken record, but how does this person expect to sell it with pics like this?? Pull it out, blow up the tires and wash it. Anyhoo, look over everywhere…might be good

I noticed a couple of the pictures are even duplicates. Drives me crazy too. I suppose the dash pic was supposed to show mileage 😂 Could make a great entry level classic for someone. I think the paint may even be salvageable with a good cleaning, but again, hard to tell. I don’t mind the 6 cylinder at all, but I’d want to swap in a third pedal!

If you want it to go to a good home then the seller would want the buyer to be there in person to look it over, too many little dick rawlings types out there that would want to wire the money in two hours and have a hauler picking it up by dinner time.

Advertisement says manual but I’m seeing an automatic shifter. Depending on how much rust is underneath, it may be a fair deal. I agree it needs to be pulled out for a thorough inspection.

    Really ????
“ Rust repair isn’t cheap or easy on these. It just seems that this one might have escaped all of that unpleasantness.”

The mustang is one of the cheapest cars to buy parts for.. ever priced mopar parts for a road runner ?

These cars are easy to repair and fix….
Granted a mustang with no rust is preferred but a floor panel section or quarters will not break the bank …

Jeff, a great entry level car that needs an inspection if everything is fair and all there.

Lot of work & TLC to get this Pony back on the road. Mainly check for cowl rust, floor boards…. clean fuel system, brakes, transmission, engine status, change oil, filter, transmission fluid, new tires, etc….

Auto floor shift, one large brake pedal. How do sellers misidentify easy details like these?

I agree with the transmission mis-description, and it always bothered me when I saw one listed that way. But I did it once listing a vehicle for sale. I could not believe “I” did it. It is easy to do using my laptop. I always proof read my ads two and three times. But slipped up on the transmission part as it is not part of the main description listing.
Easy to do, even for a Craigslist junkie like me.

That’s all the money for a six cylinder. A 289 ci would be a great deal.

I wonder what the other side looks like. It’s impossible to assess value without seeing the whole car. I’ll pass on this one.

I think that’s kitty litter next to and under the driver’s side.

    Possibly a tell ?

Great color. And a six. Both plusses for me.

And interiors had a choice of five or six “color keyed” interiors, not just black.

Doug/David: look closely at all the seat photos — the driver’s seat has more wear revealing red underneath. The seat bottom and bolster are also showing the same reddish hue. So maybe a red seat was purchased in lieu of a reupholstering years ago and it was sprayed with black vinyl spray. Not a deal breaker for me. I would expect a musty wet smell inside judging by how this car was parked.
