Mopar Muscle Project: 1972 Plymouth Barracuda

Update 12/23/19 – This Barracuda project has been relisted here on eBay. Will it sell this time around?

From 8/18/19 – This 1972 Plymouth Barracuda is no small project, but the seller contends its life-long residence in Arizona and New Mexico has played a significant role in the body remaining largely rust-free. While the car isn’t currently what you’d call pretty, the seller contends the lack of major rot-through makes it a strong candidate for restoration. Find it here on eBay with bids reaching $5K and the reserve unmet.

The Barracuda sports a variety of different paint jobs and patches of surface rust, but the seller claims its what you can’t see that matters. Features like a rust-free firewall with original paint; floor boards wearing mostly original paint with only modest surface rust; rot-free frame rails; shock towers in good shape with OG paint. The lack of rust is the Barracuda’s best feature.

Check out those floor panels with the original paint – that is a feature you don’t often see in vintage muscle cars. While the exterior is fairly rough in appearance, the prevalence of original paint underneath the carpets and elsewhere seems to firm up the response as to what color the exterior should be repainted; the only answer is whatever this factory shade of blue paint is.

The interior doesn’t show it, but the seller confirms door panels are included, as is the rear seat and driver’s seat. The passenger seat is missing. Drivetrain-wise, a 318 is currently installed with a column shift automatic, but the seller references providing a 400 engine block that he can stoke to 500CI, for an additional cost. Would you keep the 318 or go for a more powerful swap?

I would stroke the 318 and convert to a floor console shift. My son has an auto console from his 74 cuda that he converted to manual. Don’t need a big block in these.

Good question, Jeff. We all have to wonder what caused the re-listing: was it buyers remorse, a phony buyer or was it something discovered that the seller didn’t disclose?
Regardless-it’s here again so let’s see if the cycle repeats itself another time.

On to a more positive note:
    Merry Christmas, BarnFinds readers!
