Mother Was First Owner: 1969 Ford LTD 428 V8

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Britanny Blue is such a nice, crisp color for this 1969 Ford LTD four-door sedan and it was the favorite color for the seller’s dad, a former Southeast Region Ford Vice President, who liked all of his cars to be this color or a similar blue color. The covered headlights are a nice feature, keeping things clean up front. The seller is the second owner, the first being his mother who bought it new in the fall of 1968. Thanks to Matt H. for the tip!

It’s hard to tell why the color seems to be darker in some areas, but the seller says it’s perfect and there is no rust anywhere and it sure looks like a gem. They say that their mother bought it new and it may look sedate, but this car has a monster 428 V8 under the hood – although the seller says almost everything has been replaced with new or remanufactured parts: the engine, transmission, front suspension, steering, braking, rear diff, axles, starter, water pump, mufflers, and much more.

They go on to say that they’re moving to Hawaii this fall and they have restored several Fords or Ford products that they’re taking with them, but this isn’t one of them. The second-generation LTD was made from the fall of 1968 for the 1969 model year until the end of the 1978 model year with many design and engineering changes during that time. In case you were wondering what the trunk looked like on the inside, here it is.

The interior appears to need some work, with a cracked steering wheel and dash cover. They say that there is new carpet and seatbelts, along with new seals and tires. My dad had a company car (Pinto!) with a mobile phone like the one shown hanging under the dash here. I can still remember the number, which is a little odd. Scotty G Rainman. This car has a power front bench and AC and the seats appear to have had the inserts changed at some point. Or, maybe those are just pads over the bottom portion of the front and rear benchseat? The photos are small so it’s hard to tell.

I’m not sure why this engine is new, but it’s Ford’s 428-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have been factory-rated at 320 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. More than enough to do a Jay Leno-like burnout, not that any of you would do that (cough). It has factory dual exhaust, beefed-up suspension, also factory, and many other features. It’s said to run fine and sends power through a three-speed automatic to the rear wheels. They have it posted here on craigslist in Las Vegas, Nevada and they’re asking $10,500 or the best sane offer – although, when I saved the original listing, they were asking $7,000. Here is the original listing. Hagerty is at $14,600 for a #3 good-condition car. Any thoughts on this LTD?

It looks like a really nice car, and for 7000 it would be perfect.

(thumbs up) (dang, it just worked an hour ago)

I agree, I was surprised to see the price bump, but with all of that work, being rust-free, and having that giant V8, even $10,000 is probably a good price in 2024.

Scotty, my thumb doesn’t work half the time. See if you can get that fixed, will ya please?

Good write-up Scotty. Nice old LTD, has had lots of work. Well-equipped. Not expensive. Would be a pleasant cruiser.

Read the craigslist ad, it’s fun. It shows the old Fords and Lincolns the seller isn’t selling, all Brittany Blue (or similar shade). That too is a favorite color of mine. I’m not sure I’d call the color ‘rare’; maybe unique would be a more appropriate term.

There’s a lot of car here for the price. I’m sure it needs work to travel, but it’s got some nice LTD features and then some. Not a fan of the upholstery repairs

The FE-family 428 was replaced by the 385-family 429 for 1969. I can’t find any references to the 428 in big Fords except for police cars.

You are correct. The police car was the only full sized ford that could be ordered with a 428. So this car either has the police package or perhaps it was a 390 that got upgraded by the owner. Otherwise the big engine this year was the 429, which is a very different engine. The VIN will solve this. Cool car, regardless. It’s equipped with some nice options.

May be the wrong air cleaner lid.

No 428 in the big Ford brochures for ’69 (only 429) but apparently still an option in the Interceptor. Maybe a special order or transplant. At any rate this is right up my alley with style and power and room for a road trip. Thanks, Scotty!

Todd & all, I’m assuming that the original engine was replaced with a 428 as the seller said it was replaced, and you can see the air cleaner so at least that part is from a 428, or the decal is anyway. I wish I could get you guys to do my taxes with eagle eyes like that! Thanks for bringing that up, I saw that the 428 was gone for ’69 but figured it was replaced by a 428 as shown in the photo.

People that show cars for sale having dash covers, seat covers, steering wheel covers etc., are hiding something worse underneath. That’s the only conclusion I can draw. No one buys a car because it has unnecessary cool covers. 😮

    I had a 68 Galaxie with a 6 cylinder. What a slug it was. Even with that 428, it’s still a barge.

The owners blue Thunderbird is beautiful! But it’s a 1965 not 1966.

I’m definitely out. Probably a good price at 10500 but I’m not a fan of price jumps. Shows greed.

I’ve a feeling that the seller was selling for 7k and kept getting inundated with “I got 4 grand, cash, right now,” inquests, so they raised the price to compensate and land at their target. At least having experienced how sales work on CL and MP, that’s my theory. At 7k, this Ford looks like a very good buy.

Try sitting on a crummy plastic seat on a summer day in vegas that will answer your question about the seat mats!!

My father bought a new 1969 Ford LTD 4 door hardtop. Trust me, they had worse colors than Brittany Blue. Try Dresden Blue or Aztec Aqua. Ours was a really ugly color, sort of a pea green called New Lime. Here in Wisconsin these were mostly in the junkyards all rusted out by 1979. They had another color and I will never forget this, when my family was purchasing our car, another Ford was on the showroom floor in a color called Indian Fire. It was a beautiful copper metallic. Anyway the wife of the owner of the dealership said “it looks just like rust!” Maybe she knew something that we didn’t!

If you, back then, could only have forseen the “styling” & “color choices” you get to pick from today – inside & outside – & today’s window sticker prices – u would have had a seizure, also wondering what happened to all the cars today, let alone the 2 doors!
I think Ford had like 25! different colors available back in ’67!

AM/FM radio, also premium rim blow steering wheel two more options that were checked on the list. Also appears to be a 428 from the valve covers and intake.

I messaged the seller. The 5th digit of the VIN is a Y. That means this car originally came from the factory with a 390-2V motor.

I had one of these — 429 engine. Very different steering wheel on mine (and on every other example I have seen), and different hubcaps. When they went to unleaded gas and lower octane, the engine knocked like crazy when you leaned at all into the gas-pedal. If you re-set the timing to get rid of the knocking, you got a rough idle and about half the power. If you had the AM radio with 8-track stereo on the hump in front, that was one HOT long-distance radio! But the (Bendix, was it?) AM/FM stereo radio was one real turkey — rather lackluster sensitivity, (“modest”, to be kind) audio power, and a tendency for losing one channel owing to “cold” internal solder connexions. I generally liked the car, but the lack of usefulness with unleaded gas rather ruined it for me. It did not rust on me — but the much more attractive 1970 version rotted out quickly behind the rear wheels, for some reason, with huge holes through the trunk floor, and rear springs eventually rusting-out and collapsing into the trunk. These were common with either the 390 or 429 — and I think the 390 RAN better. The 1967 Ford was pretty, but the ’68 was ugly and the ’69 just as bad. The Galaxie XL and LTD were vastly improved by their front end with closed headlamps and dignified grill-treatment. The 1970 was even nicer, and got rid of that ugly rear. About the closed headlights: try to chase the myriad vacuum-leaks that cause them to slowly open after the car has been parked for a few hours. Those same vacuum-leaks also cause rough-idling and lacklustre performance. And be ready for freon-leaks in the air-conditioning showing-up often. TOO MANY PESKY HEADACHES with these cars! I suppose $7,000 is an okay price; however, having BEEN there, I’ll pass, thank you.

    with C-6 automatic: check.
Floaty 4-wheel independent suspension: check…Oh hi guys, don’t
mind me, I’m just checkin out all the
goodies on this grand old gal so that I
can tell the girls that THIS is the car I
want for my 70th birthday in a few weeks. Doubt I’ll ever get it but it doesn’t hurt to try right?!!! What a solid car for my niece to take her driving test in too! Solid and dependable, with no bells and whistles to distract a young driver.
Just a great old sedan to jump into and take a road trip! If you wanna see
a period road test of this car, go to
YouTube, type in Bud Lindeman drive
tests, and ban! you’re there. Oh yeah,
if you get tired driving this thing, pull
    over!

A couple friends in early 70’s raced the family 1970’ LTD against a 68’ Chrysler 300 can’t say who won because going around a bend their cars kinda kissed so they both let off but I remember both engines roaring like a lion.

@Snotty: He sure did didn’t he! Couldn’t wait for Sunday evenings to
watch his TV show on Channel 3 out of Champaign Illinois before retiring to bed so that I could get up and go to
school the next day. Some of my friends would watch it too and we’d
talk about the show before we went to Homeroom to start our day. He really had a colorful and entertaining
way of describing each road test and
the features it had. This test and the
’69 AMX are the the best of the best of the whole series. It was a great program even though I don’t recall the name of it. Whatever it was, it was
good clean fun for many a young
Motorhead like me. Now that’s when
    TV was great!
