Mucho Projecto Poncho: 1967 Pontiac GTO

This 1967 Pontiac GTO is a barn find according to the seller but they don’t go into particulars on where they found it hiding. They say that it was “last registered in 1989. Have clean and clear NJ state title.” This project Pontiac is listed on eBay with a current bid of $3,400 but the reserve isn’t met yet. It’s located in Lindenhurst, New York.

I know that GTOs are worth a reasonable amount of money in nice original or restored condition, but this is a lot of work on a rusty car no matter what breed/make/model it is. I have a friend who has a ’67 GTO in great condition and he’s had it for two or three decades now. I’ll have to ask him what he paid for it. Hagerty is at $14,400 for a #4 fair condition GTO with a 4-barrel 400 V8 – after a 10% deduction for having an automatic.

This does look like a reasonably solid car, it’s just that surface rust that’s catching my eye more than anything. It’s everywhere. And, it’s under everywhere, the whole bottom of this thing is almost gone. The seller says it “needs a full restoration but everything is there. It will need new sheet metal, as seen in the pics the passenger rear frame rail is rotted.the rest of the frame is in great condition. Car needs trunk pan, floor pan patches.” We all know that just about every part is available to restore these GM muscle cars so if a person has a few weekends/months, a welder, and some talent: badda-bing, bodda-boom: Bob’s your uncle.

I’m seeing thousands in metal work on this car alone and it’s never less than $5k for a drop-dead perfect paint job, is it? Then there’s the interior. The front seats look good which is surprising given the horrible condition of the floors. The seller mentions the “Factory in dash tach” and “Console with original optioned HURST DUAL GATE SHIFTER”.

The seller says that the engine is a “400 original YS code and it does RUNS!! Has factory exhaust manifolds on it still!” And, “(There is a 2brl carb on it, was put on for gas crises back in the day) do not have the intake and carb. That is the only thing not original on the car. Everything else is original.” This 400 V8 would have had a 4-barrel on it originally and 335 hp would have been the output to the round, black, sticky things that leave those black stripes on the road. Would you have what it takes to get this GTO back on the road again?

As much as I love Ponchos, I hate to say that this one may be a parts car, at best. The highlight is the Hurst ‘His ‘n’ Her’ shifter for the TH400.

Someone would have to be pretty damed keen (or is that insane? At my age, I get confused) to take this on as a restoration project.

YS engine code is correct for a 4 Bbl engine; there was a 2 Bbl option available.

This would make a much better purchase than that Mach 1.

License plate on car came from 1984. Those plates were gone by 1987. No way that this car was on the road with that plate in 1989. Just saying.

With that much rust and a NJ title, could it have been a Hurricane Sandy flood car and the seller put those tags on it for people to think its been in New York that long?

67’s are my favorite GTOs but this one would be a labor of love and I don’t have that much love left.

Are we sure this is even for sure a GTO and not a Lemans? I guess it doesn’t matter much, I too just see a parts car here. Sad to see it so far gone.

The tail light would be different for a LeMans.

Well they could have changed the grill / the taillight panel / swapped the narrower chrome side molds of a Lemans to the wider GTO ones and filled in the three gills on each quarter panel to make a lemans in to a GTO but with all the rust it must have been done years ago and a quick look at the Vin for a 237 (lemans) 242 (GTO) will reveal the truth.

I had a friend who bought a new truck in the early 70’s , Complained about poor fuel mileage, ordered with a two barrel . I had the same truck with with a four barrel . I got better mileage , primarilys are smaller on a four barrel keep your foot out of ,
      Better fuel mileage

Is it me,or not?The rivets on the VIN tag look as though they’ve been messed with? I love ’66 & ’67 GTOs
and it’s a shame that this one is so far gone.Motor code is good,as is the VIN tag(suspect)-it’s a stretch that there’s $3 g’s worth of useable parts left.

The VIN plate rivets for the GTOs built at the Baltimore GM plant often look that way. But I agree it looks messy.

License plates are current issue N Y plates. Confused as to N J title ? N Y cars up to 73 are transferred via registration , no titles issued for. 73 & earlier.

Wow !!! With that much rust in the trunk gotta wonder, where it has been sitting.
Looks to me like a squirrel took up residence in the back seat and did not make it.

When they get to this stage, you are buying a memory – not a car….
