mga-raffle-1

The good people over at the Owls Head Transportation Museum just let us know that they are raffling off this great looking 1960 MGA! Tickets cost $100 each and they are only selling 777. All the proceeds will go to the Museum programs. You can learn more and purchased tickets here on their site. The winner will be announced on September 12, 2015 at their annual fundraising event. This Museum holds some great educational programs and organizes lots of fun events, so it seems like a good place to donate.

I’ve seen a few of these raffles end up going to “friends”. How can you find out when raffles like this are honest? I’m not meaning to blame this museum — I’ve never heard of this place. I just need someone who can convince me that I might donate $100 and have an actual chance to drive an MGA back to California.

Smitty, I agree completely. I entered a raffle for a beautiful Ford Woody only to find out the “winner” was on the Board of Directors of the non-profit foundation. I no longer enter any contests like this unless, as you noted, I personally know the organization. Let’s hope this one is legit and run fairly and openly.

You’re right. Back in the day, you assumed people were honest until proven differently. Now, you must assume the opposite. These auctions are even less transparent than charities.

This raffle is tempting. Looks like a survivor that just got new chrome and paint. I’d love to have another to replace the 1500 I sold long ago by mistake.

I was impressed with this museum when I visited some years back. It’s small and next to a county airport on a peninsula on the Maine coast. Terrific location, and altho small, it’s high quality, with mostly planes & cars and some other kinds of transport. It’s one of those small museums that don’t get a lot of national press but are well worth visiting if you’re in the area.

Other than the fact that it runs mainly on volunteers I don’t know the inner workings of this museum, but it’s definitely worth supporting for the excellent machinery and info displays they have. You see the kids who are there looking all around with big wide eyes at things they’ve never seen before.

I too have just given up entering these types of raffles, and have begun to question the authenticity of same. As many times as I’ve entered, I’ve never even gotten a “thank you for your entry” reply.

Think I’ll just keep my money in my pocket, and support my local church.

I can assure you that the Owl’s Head Museum is a reputable and ethical museum, and that everything that they do there is top notch.
It is an institution up in Maine, and the entity is run with the highest regard for the preservation of the antique airplanes and automobiles in the collection, which is nothing short of outstanding!
Have a look at their website here:
    http://owlshead.org/
They often fly some of the reproduction and original aircraft and drive many of the original cars at events during the season.
They run a down to earth auction each year with a wide range of offerings for any buyer from projects and drivers for a few thousand bucks, up to the “big buck” investment cars, but the majority of what is offered at the auction is attainable for us regular folk.
The actual museum collection is incredible, and deserves a visit if you are ever in the area, even though it is a bit of a trek to get out to the facility.
I can assure you that these are good people, and that you can buy these raffle tickers with confidence that the raffle will be run properly and ethically.
It is easy to criticize anything that is posted here, but spreading these concerns with no actual knowledge of the museum that is the subject of the criticism, does nothing to protect readers, and does so much damage to the fund raising efforts of a remarkably professional museum that is one of the few institutions that does it right!
