NASCAR Clone Project: 1964 Ford Galaxie 500

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1964 Ford Galaxie is an interesting project that has unfortunately stalled. The seller was building this as a NASCAR road course clone, and has completed a lot of the work towards this goal. It is now for sale here on eBay. Located in Spokane, Washington, it is offered with a salvage title. The seller has set the opening bid at $3,400.

The new owner of this Galaxie actually has a couple of options available to them. They can either complete the project as intended, or they can return the car to its original purpose as the work to date can all be reversed. The body on this Galaxie appears to be quite solid. The seller states that there are some pin-holes near the rear window from when this car had a vinyl top, but these can be easily repaired. All of the original external trim and lights are still available to return this to the road with the exception of the rear bumper.

The interior is stripped pretty bare on this Galaxie as part of the conversion process. If you were to choose to return the Galaxie to road use the roll-cage can be removed, and the seller still retains all of the interior trim except for a front seat. The seller does have a number of parts for the conversion including a switch panel.

There’s more roll-cage lurking back here, but as you can see, removal would not be a major task if the car were to be returned to the road. Other than that it would just be a matter of completing the car to race standards.

The engine bay is currently empty. The seller has a date code 390 FE engine to go with the car which was removed from a running car. It is complete except for the inlet manifold. As you can see the road-use exhaust is present, but the seller is also including a set of Hooker Super Comp headers and a 3″ exhaust as part of the conversion, along with a dual MSD setup. There is no transmission but the 9′ rear end is still in place. There is also a racing fuel cell in the trunk, but the seller still has the original gas tank.

So there it is, one interesting project. I don’t know what it will sell for, but there is a reasonable investment already made on the competition components. As a Ford man part of me objects to this project, but as a retired racing driver part of me thinks that this is a fantastic project with loads of potential. The final result will depend on what the new owner wants to do with the car. Would you complete this project or would you return this Galaxie to the road?

I’m thinking Goodwood Festival and similar events for the Galaxie. Spring for a 427/four-speed and update the suspension and have a blast!

This sure looks like a solid car from the pics, but
I have never seen a factory vinyl top on these, but
the rear window areas were prone to rust with out one.
I would try to make it a “drivable”Nascar tribute, since so much has been done already.keeping the windows and some of the trim that the race cars did have, and giving it a total Retro stock car look,on the outside.
This would be great at shows, and possibly on the track.
64 Galaxies are really cool to me,and I would love to see a
vintage stock car tribute, although I may have used a “beater”
to build one, this looks pretty nice.could be really cool…!!!

Junior welding on rollbar and pulled apart and got lost … looks like to me

The gas tank looks like it’s enormous for a couple of laps … now it just needs floors cut out for flint stone pedals 😏

    I will pass on medicracy..

Neither one , it has a salvage title, can not be sold, person with title has to have it flat bed towed wheels off ground to Dmv, Dmv inspects it, passes it hopefully as safe, then you get a rebuilt title, which makes value of cat drop 75 percent. If you keep car and for yourself, fine, bu to sell it, you will not get much I believe, unless other states are easy to give out clear titles after it was salvage.

Forget Vintage racing, this will never even be a mid runner amongst the Vintage Roadracing Sedan Class … 3750- 4050 pounds and 119 ” wheelbase … on pathetic suspension…

Kinda like making an Elephant do a Polka

Might be ok along with a bunch of NASCAR Stock Car Roadracers of the time, but where are they ???

Much better choices to spend 25k+ on a car for Vintage Roadracing … but what do I know, with a Holman Moody Lark clone in the works…

Are you sure that is not an 8″ diff, the two dimples and the flat section top and bottom look like an 8″ to me, but hey I have been known to be wrong in the past.
