Never Going to Sell It: 1982 Jeep Scrambler CJ-8

The seller of this 1972 Jeep Scrambler contends he never intended to sell his prize find, a survivor CJ bought off of the son of the original owner. With under 80,000 miles and a bed that looks like it’s never been used, the Jeep is a rust-free survivor, helped by its longtime ownership in Sacramento. It remains almost entirely stock but is not running at the moment. Find it here on eBay with an $18,999 Buy-It-Now.

While the paint is faded, the seller contends it is all original. If this Jeep were in the northeast, it would have rusted to bits by now. The incredible condition of the body, along with the unused bed, seem to point to a truck that saw more city or farm use than rough and wild country. The seller contends there is a not a speck of rust to be found anywhere on the Scrambler, and there’s no reason not to believe him based on the pictures.

The interior isn’t great but we’ve seen worst. The seats are split and will need new covers if you want them to be perfect. The seller notes some mild issues inside the Jeep, including an aftermarket tach bolted to the dash and a bypassed heater core, resulting in no heat in the Jeep. This is not a hugely complicated fix, but heater core replacement can be a pain. The Jeep has not been fired up or driven, so we hope that T5 manual still functions as intended.

The big question is the motor, which the seller says doesn’t run but just needs a fuel pump. Although he has little evidence of this being the solution, he seems adamant that cheap fuel pump will solve most of this Jeep’s mechanical ills – and that compression numbers are healthy. The seller further contends this Scrambler needs just a single day’s worth of work before it cruise the country; is that a bet you would take?

This is obviously a very rare and solid Jeep Scrambler, but I think the Seller may be looking at a no sale. He is presuming that his honesty and transparency will be a factor in convincing prospective Buyers to purchase the Jeep in the condition that he did and based on what he was told by the original owner.

It is not running (even though he was told it needed a fuel pump), needs so much cosmetic work done plus the Seller contradicts himself stating it is a “100% unmolested, all-original scrambler except for an aftermarket tachometer next to the steering column and the bed tie brackets (bolted to the side of the bed)”.

I noticed too that the steel wiper arms have no blades and are laying directly against the glass. I don’t know how long the wiper blades are but wonder if that is a scratch on the driver’s side.

Honest sellers/people normally don’t stress that they are honest, their actions speak for themselves.

He’s had it for 2 1/2 years, yet his pal, a former ASE certified master mechanic performed a series of tests and said it was “strong” yet didn’t change a simple fuel pump which the previous owner said was the problem. Add to this, his asking price is higher than all but two Scramblers which have sold on eBay within the last 90 days.

I wouldn’t trust this seller. His entire story comes across as being contrived to the point of being laughable.

I agree. If you’re asking $19k for a cosmetically-challenged, shredded-interior vehicle, the least you can do is install a new fuel pump (a job that is cheap and literally takes minutes to perform). There’s too much obvious deferred maintenance under the hood, and you can bet the drivetrain hasn’t seen much more attention, if any. This truck is worth the price for a strong runner with a decent interior and good paint, but not for this. If a reliable driver, it’d worth maybe $10-12k to me.

i dig these even more than early Broncos or Blazers.
it calls out for a modern Hemi & 6-speed, moderate lift with suitable tires, wetsuit covered bucket seats covered & a quality repaint in your choice.
(i think they look best in dark tints so would likely go with a deep red or green but black would work too. or that factory root beer ish color.)
i get it if your taste says keep it stock & restore it….i’m just dreaming anyway so it doesn’t matter.
regardless, really cool trucks that were before their time & unappreciated. happy to see that they’re getting their due now.
guess there’s no reason this can’t be worth $15k when rust bucket Bronco’s go for about the same.

A Hemi would be great for a show Jeep, but ridiculous overkill for a CJ. The best transplant is a fuel-injected 4.0 six.

I agree with putting in a newer 4.0 fuel injected 6!

He’s asking for 19,000 bucks. He needs to spend a few hundred and get it running then call us back .

Even then it’s 10000 dollars over priced.

Nice, relatively unmolested Scrambler… but not worth $19K if not running, and actual condition of engine and that weak t-5 tranny are effectively unknown. Seller needs to bring it down a few thousand, THEN maybe. I’d restore to original condition, with a few modern functional upgrades.

I’m pretty interested, but like above comments, doesn’t work at that number. tires, top interior, body and paint, running issues, and probably other but who knows you can’t drive it. I would be traveling 1800 miles to get it. Best deal would be to get it running, tires etc. and the trip home would probably do it a bunch of good. Guess I will try the “Make Offer” and see what happens.

What is it with tires recently? $19,000 and no spare ,only a rim. Other cars bring your own tires and rims. Are tires being rationed? I haven’t gotten my stamps, how do I get them?
