No Reserve: 1970 Porsche 911T

It’s rare to find an air-cooled Porsche 911 in good shape being offered with no reserve, but that’s what we appear to have here with this long-hood 911T. The seller claims it benefits from a recent refurbishment that included a paint job and replacement engine, and it’s now listed here on eBay with bids to $33,500. The stance is spot-on and while some of the details could use finishing, at the end of the day it’s a running, driving 911 with no reserve.

The 911 is optioned and upgraded nicely, as it sports a 5-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes, a heater, and a Becker Europa radio. The mulberry paint job looks good from here, but of course, the devil is in the details, so an up-close inspection is warranted if you’re worried about fish eyes and orange peel. The Fuchs wheels look smart and the slim bumpers and bumperettes are a great look on any era of 911.

Inside, the clean interior sports two bucket seats that appear to have been re-done at some point; they simply look too good to be original. The dash doesn’t appear to have any cracks, and it’s always nice to see an original steering wheel if you’re into preserving old cars as I am. I’ve got nothing against an aftermarket sport steering wheel, but there’s something authentic about driving an old car with its typically bus-like steering wheel. The photos don’t allow for a good sense of what condition the carpets are in, but I don’t see any glaring flaws.

The replacement engine could be a buzzkill for diehard 911 enthusiasts, as most buyers want a numbers-matching car to preserve their investment. However, for an air-cooled car you can simply get in and drive, it actually makes the decision to use your car much easier than if it were a near-perfect, numbers-matching specimen. The current bid price is more than fair and actually represents a bit of a deal, but so would a final number under $50,000.

Sweet! Original size motor w/gearbox, nicely refurbished. As a nit to pick the unlatched hood leaves one to wonder if it’s an issue-if so, what else isn’t being talked about?
That said (and hopefully it isn’t the case) this is one of those that a driver, especially a Porsche-file, will enjoy for years to come.

Great car. Should bring lots of enjoyment to the next owner. GM sure did a good job of emulating the dash and steering wheel for the Gen 2 Camaro. Those guys knew what looked good .

Looks very nice and is an unusual color, with the longhood market settling it will be interesting to see what the final bid is. Fresh everything is a big plus, but the hood latch is probably not properly adjusted after paint. They can be a snot to get right, and more than a few guys have struggled to get the hood open again while making the adjustment. BTDT.

Oh boy–a Becker radio! Now there’s an overpriced piece of junk!

300 people watching as of this morning with one day left in the auction. There will likely be a lot of “last minute” bidding. The repaint and the non-matching motor hurt the value, but it’s a very good driver and that’s how I like mine. If it was close enough for a personal inspection, I would really be interested. I’ve bought cars sight-unseen, but only after many discussions with the sellers who were also enthusiasts. eBay doesn’t lend itself to that and scares me. $55k – $60k, that’s my guess.

Not the same car (different radio and mileage that I can spot), but it sure is it’s identical twin. Sold on BAT for 48K on 10/10/23.

As a follow up, eBay lists it as “sold” for $40,600. Boy, was I off. Cooling market for long hoods? Something wrong with it known only to the bidders? Reinforces my aversion to the thought of buying higher buck cars in eBay auctions. Too many unknowns with little time to gather information

I won the car on eBay, unfortunately the ad was bogus. Scam I guess. I thought I had won the lottery when I won the auction but after digging around I found the car had sold on BAT for 90k back in October of this year. 😕

Dozier, sorry to hear that. The one I spotted on BAT looked exactly like this one, so I was wondering if it was the same one. However, the pictures in the EBay auction must have been taken before the one on BAT because it had slightly lower mileage and a different radio.
