Fun Driver: 1977 Dodge Ram Charger 4×4

Located in Moreno Valley, California, this 1977 Dodge Ram Charger is for sale here on eBay. The bids have reached $5,300 but they should go higher before the auction ends in 3 days. This is a nice usable example with 89,000 miles on the odometer and an almost rust free vehicle.

The Ram Charger is fitted with a 360 cubic inch V8 engine from a 1993 Ram pickup. With fuel injection, this truck should run well and start right up. The seller states that it is a one-owner vehicle being sold at no reserve. The chassis has a Rancho 4 inch lift kit, 33 inch BFG mud terrain tires, and the original manual transmission.

The interior looks nice and the seller added a full roll cage to the interior of the vehicle. The dash has been upgraded with Autometer gauges. The ad states that the radio, electrics work well but the winch and halogen lights need to be hooked up. The Ram Charger has a full-size spare and runs on Pro Comp 15×8 wheels. The engine has a new battery, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and starter.

There are a few dents and scrapes on the body but the Ram Charger looks like an honest driver that could be restored or driven as is. We featured a Chevrolet Blazer last week that sold for $20,000. While this one is not in as good of condition, it should generate some interest from the off-road and 4 wheel drive enthusiasts. What do you think it is worth?

Personally I would’ve swapped a 12V Cummins in, but that 360 can easily be built into a stout performer with a few speed parts swapped on. Those graphics on the exterior are mint. Leave the bumps and bruises and cruise in this bad boy

Cummins would have been a lot of extra work due to the weight. They were available factory with a 360

Wrong side of the USA but I think I want it. Can anyone let me know if that’s an AC compressor on the top of the engine before I bid? Shipping across the country will be expensive, but nothing like this with little rust in FL. My daughter was incredulous about the length of the shifter. I drove a similar plow truck in the Philly suburbs in high school. Only about 18 inches between the gears. Why are all the sweet 70’s trucks in CA?

      That is an AC compressor.

The cool trucks are in California because it’s by and large a dry state, cars tend not to rust. Your assessment is only partially accurate, only vehicles not subject to California’s biannual smog inspections survive in great numbers. The vast majority of what would now be desirable cars produced after the mid-70’s that otherwise would have survived, met their demise due to the states harsh testing and inspection regime.

Nice truck! My buddies 77 PW had the 360, 4bbl, duals and auto. Sounded great and seemed to have tons of power at the time, but I was used to my family’s stock 60-66 Chevy’s and GMCs so not lots of power to compare it too. My only concern would be the knee-knocker and head-basher roll cage for someone my size, though I sure appreciate the added safety.

Why would the seller not complete the wiring? Little things lead to people having doubts.

The wiring mentioned seems to be just the winch and auxiliary lighting on the bumper. Perhaps the winch/bumper combo is a recent add on.

Little things quickly bring down the price. Worth the sellers time to pay to have it fixed before listing.

I had one of these rigs back in the middle 1980’s. It was a fun to drive and go mudding in. The one I had was green and had an automatic it was a great memory. For the price on eBay this would be a good starter for anyone who wanted to trail ride hunting or fishing. I wish it was closer to Arkansas.

Love the Ramchargers, and their lesser known sister vehicle, Plymouth Trail Duster. Not every day you see one with 4 speed and factory A/C. Like the K5 Blazer and ’78-’79 Bronco, well over 90% of these are equipped with automatic transmissions, as is my own ’78 Ramcharger. Great for anything, on or off road, and timeless styling, these three early true SUVs are cherished vehicles that last forever with proper maintenance and care. Buyer of this one will be very happy.

I wouldnt pay more than 5k for it. If it had been all original and had the spare tire gate on the back I would pay more. My Grandpa bought a 79 brand new off the lot then later sold it to my dad then my mom came in and claimed it which probably saved its life back then lol! Dad was a drinker! But that was most memorable vehicle we owned growing up but 20+ years ago my brother ended up with it and he took it to the scrap yard. 😭 I have the original steering wheel as a keepsake though! Tough ass trucks they are i would love nothing more than to own another one but they are definitely hard to find anymore.

Sitting at $5,900 right now. May bid this afternoon. Turns out, it’s pretty expensive to ship one of these to FL, but the scarcity of these down here means top dollar. I’m expecting it will jump a couple thousand at the end, putting me out of the running. The jump from #4 to #3 in Hagerty is 5k to 12k. So there’s some upside in cleaning it up if you’re local. I would put a full soft top on it and dd.

the later engine is a good upgrade. Had a 76 dodge magnum with a 360.
Leaded oil from the front seal. Was told not worth the trouble to fix. Engines from that time period were known to have minor problems. If you brought this Ramcharger to the northeast it would be rusting away in a year

Drowning the undercarriage and inside of the sheet metal in Corrosion Free or a similar product would slow down the rust ,but it would win fairly quickly. Rust never sleeps in a salt state.
