No Reserve Driver: 1971 Volvo 1800E

This 1971 Volvo 1800E is a solid driver equipped with the preferred drivetrain featuring Bosch fuel injection, which delivered greater efficiency and more power. The car for sale here is not perfect but seems quite decent, sold with extensive documentation and a fair amount of recent mechanical work. The seller doesn’t mention the presence of rot, so we’re assuming this example looks just as nice underneath. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $10K and no reserve.

The naming conventions of Volvo’s classic sports car can make you dizzy, from the years they used the letter “P” in front to the “ES” designation for the hatchback. What remained constant, however, is the gorgeous body and sensuous design that seemingly transformed Volvo from a builder of dowdy passenger vehicles into a brand capable of designing a drop-dead gorgeous coupe. The paint looks decent – not spectacular – and shut lines all appear good. Chrome bumpers look serviceable in their current condition.

The interior is another bright spot, looking loved but not abused. It looks pleasingly worn, not suffering from over-use but also not so mint that you’re afraid to use it. The seller notes everything works in the cabin, from the wipers to the heat, and the dash appears to be in good shape with no egregious cracks. The backseat looks just as nice if not a little better, not that you’d want to spend much time back there. While a three-speed automatic was available, this car is thankfully equipped with the manual transmission.

The B20E engine produces a respectable 130 b.h.p., a figure that gives the Volvo more than enough thrust to manage modern traffic. The seller doesn’t spell out in great detail any recent maintenance, but the engine bay as presented is quite clean. The only maintenance item mentioned is a front brake job, with the rear components seemingly left un-installed. Based on the seller’s other listings, he’s most likely a dealer, so some level of detective work will be required by potential buyers to sort out what sort of history this lovely 1800E has had.

I had to look long at this one. I have an old friend that had an exact car like this, ( maybe a little greener) for all I know, still has it. Fantastic cars, and I’m glad the seller mentioned the late Irv Gordon that put an astonishing 3 million miles on an older one. Having trucked 3 million miles myself, I can relate to what that’s like. And the fact there’s no rust should seal the deal. These were terrible rusters. The automatic, I believe, was the old Borg-Warner unit, and nothing wrong with it, but the 4 speed O/D is the way to go. To new owner, whatever you do, DON’T drive it in the salt bath, not even once. The kiss of death for these.
