No Reserve K5: 1979 Chevrolet Blazer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Just a few days ago, we talked about how the demand for square body trucks to restore has started to push risky projects into the “buy” category. That said, you can’t rule out the possibility of a good deal popping up every now and again, and this clean 1979 Chevrolet K5 Blazer is offered here on eBay with no reserve. It’s a runner with a healthy 350 under the hood and only 84,000 original miles. The interior is pretty killer, too.

The Blazer features two-tone gold and white paint with a classic cloth interior (the seller calls it houndstooth but it’s hard to tell for sure). Those Oklahoma license plates offer some reassurance that this Blazer isn’t rusty, and is at least far more intact than the one we featured the other day. The Blazer is a driver but it’s got a lot of original and period details working in its favor to help ignore blemishes like that dent in the tailgate. The classic color scheme, the brush guard, the white-painted rally wheels – this is a square body that looks the part.

And of course, we have a classic CB radio to round out those period-correct details. The Chevy is clearly unrestored but it also presents like a truck with under 90,000 original miles. The cloth upholstery pattern is one of the best-looking factory designs but Chevy also installed full-on plaid interiors in some trucks. The carpets appear clean as do the door panels, and even the map pockets don’t appear too saggy. The seller reports the back window doesn’t work and no word on whether it came with A/C.

The 350 is a gold-standard of truck engines and should be pretty cheap to use over the long haul with such low miles. There’s no mention of any recent maintenance but at least some startup work would seemingly be required if this truck really is a recent barn find. To the seller’s credit, he has honed in on the rust situation (or lack thereof) as a means of comforting long-distance buyers, but I’d still love to hear about any proactive belt and fluid changes performed after this clean K5 escaped from captivity.

Just sold a similar condition Jimmy and being from AZ rust-free. Guy in Ohio was thrilled with his purchase, probably where this is heading; to the rust belt…
There’s A/C on this one (see pictures) and manual windows which is nice.
Looks like a great project or drive as-is…

It would certainly appear that it came w/AC. Now the CB on the other hand…

Love this color combo, though I’m pretty sure the hood was originally brown. I’d repaint the hood, fix the back window, arrest the couple of minor rust spots and drive it just the way it is.

More likely though, we’ll see it all redone on that other website in a few months where it will go for silly money!

I’d drive this one as is and fix the rear window. This could fill a number of applications, daily driver, hauling or towing. It could be a useful vehicle without breaking the bank.

What does that matter? The barn is not for sale

Look close and you’ll see the upholstery grid pattern is indeed made out of tiny ‘houndsteeth’. However this upholstery is not what is commonly known as the true Houndstooth upholstery in these K5s, it’s this one:
https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2020/04/30/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1975-gmc-jimmy-high-sierra# ; and I believe it was only available ’80-’82.

Anyway this K5 is makes a very nice find and it’s in a condition where it’s not too nice to use while also nice enough to be proud of. I’d be very happy to bring it home
