No Reserve Project: 1974 Dodge Challenger

As a fan of the first-generation Dodge Challenger since childhood, I’d sleep better at night, knowing every remaining example will eventually be restored and put back on the road.  Sometimes, that’s a tall order, and this 1974 Dodge Challenger here on eBay is a project that will take lots of time, effort, and plenty of cash before it’s ready to hit the streets again.  This one’s in Anderson, South Carolina, with bidding only up to $2,075 at the moment.  Some good news here is there’s no reserve, but I hope whoever decides to make the highest initial investment here has some strong DIY metal skills.

The first-gen Challenger is a prime example of how quickly consumer buying patterns can change, and through no fault of its own, the car’s timing couldn’t have been much worse.  Introduced as a 1970 model, the Challenger was well-received and initially had a fine assortment of available engine options, up to and including the 426 Hemi.  However, by the end of the run in ‘74, only a couple remained, with this one equipped with the entry-level 318.  The owner says he didn’t intend to keep this engine under the hood and isn’t sure of the condition, but he does recommend an overhaul should the next owner decide to keep the original powerplant.  Whether a rebuild or a swap is chosen, an engine hoist is included in the sale!

The levels of corrosion in some areas here are extensive, with the seller telling us the severity includes the doors being rusted shut, so even if this one sells cheap, it’ll be a big investment to deal with all of the body issues.  Also in store for the next owner will be replacing the floors and trunk pan, and while we don’t get to view any photos from the underside, I’m guessing there’s a good possibility that the tin worm probably did some gnawing down below as well.

Inside, the overall condition isn’t much more promising, but at least this one’s an A/C-equipped car.  The seat coils are described as rusty but solid, and a few trim pieces for the dash not photographed also come with the sale.  With first-generation Challenger production halting midway into the final year, the 1974 models are the rarest ones of the bunch based on numbers made, and I’d love to see this one somehow hang in there.  Do you see much hope for a worthwhile resurrection here?
