No Reserve Shorty Van: 1978 Dodge B100 Tradesman

It’s amazing how many of these old-school vans still pop up with their period modifications still intact. From shag carpeting to the old-school graphics on the exterior, it says a lot about the passion behind these vans that multiple owners keep them intact. This 1978 Dodge B100 Trademsan has all the right stuff, from the decals on the exterior to shag carpeting and custom furnishings in the cargo compartment. Even better, it runs and drives and has no rust. Some fine-tuning will be needed, but it seems pretty close to daily driver ready as-is. Find the Dodge here on eBay with bids to $6,700 and no reserve.

The wheels are really the only thing out of place, as they’re a touch too small for this Dodge. Plus, there are numerous other period-correct wheels that would look awesome on here, and I’ll bet the seller could realize some additional profit if he swapped them out for something with lower offsets and a bit more sidewall. The color of the wheels goes nicely with the van’s burnt orange paint, however. The bodywork is super clean, and the Dodge looks like it’s been in California for quite some time. The seller notes it comes with a clean California title, and the lack of sun fade or tarnished bumper chrome suggests it’s spent a lot of time indoors.

The bucket seats are in great shape, as is the brown plastic engine cover. The door panels reveal what some of the styles for van modifications were back in the day, a theme that continues to the living quarters in the rear. There’s even a priavy curtain separating the driver’s compartment from the rear lounge space, a small detail that suggests a previous owner took a comprehensive approach to their van build. The seller reports it has solid floors and chassis, and that the doors still close nicely, which hopefully suggests a largely accident-free history. The seller also discloses that the gagues and air conditioning doesnt’ work.

The lounge space isn’t super fancy, but it’s a great starting point. There’s shag carpeting and a rear bench that may fold out into a bed. I would replace the wood panels inside with something a bit nicer, or at least paint it in the style of a classic 70s mural. The seller notes it could use a carburetor tune-up at some point, but that it runs fine as-is. I wouldn’t change a thing about the cosmetics aside from upgrading the interior and the wheels, and otherwise just drive and enjoy. Would you customize it further? If so, what would you do?

Just for your information. In California, Seller is responsible for a smog inspection for selling a vehicle. The rule for gasoline vehicles is 1976 and newer. Since this one says needs a carb tune, it could get expensive to make pass. Buyer be aware.

Does a slant-6 Van have enough power to maintain 70 MPH?

It’s got more than enough power. I owned one of these for years and used it to pull a 2000 pound fishing boat up mountains in colorado going to granby lake at the top of a mountain doing 65 the whole time

I like these old vans, especially the shorty Dodge B100 Tradesman, but I’d sure replace that shag carpeting and rear seat material while I was at it to eliminate the existence of any previous bodily fluids.

You don’t want to take a black light back there. To quote Peter Quill aka Skylord, “it would look like a Jackson Pollock painting”
