Even in this day and age, lots of people still seem to prefer that their Porsche 911 has a spoiler on the back. I’m here to present this gorgeous black-on-black specimen as evidence that it should not. This 1987 Porsche 911 is listed here on eBay with just under 85,000 miles and in seemingly excellent, better-than-driver condition. The seller notes it is a one-owner car with the preferred G50 transmission, and bidding is at $37,700 with the reserve unmet.
See, to me, this is one of the greatest sports car profiles ever made. The turbocharged 911 can make the big whale-tail spoiler work thanks to its fat rear fenders; on the naturally-aspirated cars, the gorgeous body lines are completely obscured by some bulbous rear spoiler that was never intended for the NA models. The seller’s car looks perfect to me, especially with those color-matched Fuchs wheels. This is effectively a triple black 911, a combination we don’t often see on the air-cooled models of this era.
The 911 has all the right options save for sport seats, with powered buckets, a matching black headliner, and a period-correct Nakamichi cassette stereo head unit. The interior is in good shape overall, with just some fading of the carpets noted as the most egregious fault. The 911 has air conditioning, a power sunroof, and power/heated side mirrors for convenience features. But the most important feature is the much-refined G50 gearbox that came in the later production Carreras like this one.
The listing mentions that it has been extensively serviced and that a full assortment of service records back that up. The 911’s 3.2L flat-six came with 217 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, which allowed it to move smartly out while making that iconic air-cooled racket. The overall presentation of this 911, what with the factory stickers still visible in the engine bay, upgraded H4 European headlights up front, and the desirable staggered wheel setup, is that of an enthusiast-owned example with all the right boxes checked.
Needs a spoiler.
True. The small chin spoiler is a bolt-on and does wonders for the high speed touring. Doesn’t need a big spoiler in back to go with it unless you plan on running over 130 for an extended period of time. One of the best of the air cooled era.
I’m in the no rear spoiler camp. The G50 and the old 915 transaxle will always stir a debate. The G50 with the hydraulic clutch really gave a refined feeling to shifting. However I have driven some 911’s with the old 915 transaxle that once worn in but not abused can be equally rewarding. Also the first time I drove a 1990 962 911 it was like night and day over the G body 911. One thing that will always stand out is how Porsche managed to build a better more refined car year after year. You would drive a new one and say how could they make this any better but then the next new model came out and it was evident. I don’t think there is another car out there that the same could be said for.
3.44 gear ⚙️ air cooled 6, 2600lb. These were great fliers.
Quick VIN search shows vehicle sold in 2022 for $73,001 in Oregon. Different wheels and tires, but same vehicle. There’s been about 4000 miles added since last sold:

And then a posting from the buyer in Alabama:

Very good example in my preferred era.
The G50 tranny is a huge improvement over the previous version. Also, you don’t/can’t run the whale tail without the chin spoiler. It’s either both or neither, so this car is a correct build.
Rob… We had a customer with a ’74 Carrera with a very healthy 2.7 engine that came from the factory with the duck tail spoiler. Didn’t have the chin spoiler and we couldn’t talk the customer into installing one. We road tested the paint up to 140 mph and the steering wheel felt like it wasn’t connected to anything. We put the chin spoiler on our ’76 912E which was only good to 128 mph but the spoiler did settle down the front end quite a bit at that speed without a rear spoiler.
You can go the website and buy it. https://inventory.trisslsportscars.com/vehicles/449/1987-porsche-911-carrera
Dealer has it priced at $114,911, so that gives you an idea of what it’s going to take to win this EBay auction.
No spoiler, good. Sunroof, not good. Oh well, nice car just the same.
Sunroof is an amazing feature providing an added view and fresh air, except under certain angles of sunlight that can hit the driver. Of course it can be partially closed to minimize the problem. You can also rest your right hand for a few minutes, road conditions permitting.
Dead on. Narrow body with a big honkin’ whale tail just looks weird. As a kid I liked it, but, I was a kid…
no wings !! show me those beautiful hips and booty !!!!
Good Spec. All black helps hide the unattractive accordion bumper fillers and rear dagmars. Agree it looks better without spoilers, maybe a ducktail & chin would be OK. Could use some serious detailing/re-conditioning for the money they probably want.
