Not Slowing Down: 1971 Porsche 914-6

Porsche 914-6

Barn Finds reader Jim S spotted this bright yellow Porsche 914-6 here on eBay, and in doing so, exposed the rapid rise in value these factory hot rods continue to enjoy. Bidding is near $40K with 5 days left on the auction and the reserve unmet. I don’t find this surprising, however, given these cars have felt under-appreciated to me for quite some time. Locally, a prominent collector bought a project example out of Florida solely as an investment, a tell-tale sign that when the big money spenders get involved, they likely see some potential in getting a return on their financial commitment. This car seems like a good one to buy, with a lot of the heavy lifting done but just imperfect enough that you can still enjoy it. But if the 914-6 continues to appreciate, I wonder how many we’ll continue to see being used as intended versus locked up in a collection. What would you do with a car like this?

If that’s an original 6 cylinder car they were very scarce. I seem to remember that they were intended primarily for racing and there were issues about whether Porsche had actually built enough of them to homologate that combination for racing.

Amazing, the bidding for the 914-6 is already 10 times the cost of a similar 914-2.0 and the reserve hasn’t been met yet! Funny thing, in stock form, the 914-6 has 125HP, just a few more than the 914-2.0 110HP, the -2.0 has more torque, especially at lower RPMs and the 2.0 out handles the -6 because it is lighter. So, at $40,000 plus, this Porsche will no doubt in up in someone’s collection. If you just want to have fun, there’s always the 914-2.0.

I thought 1970 was the only year of the 914-6,passenger seat was stationary, had 911 suspension arms, alloy,I never saw those kind of wheels on a 914-6,spoked alloy Fuchs or something like that, very exspensive and nice looking like 500.00 the 80`s
