Numbers Matching: 1978 Chevrolet Camaro RS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Chevy Camaro had a banner sales year in 1978, crushing the Ford Mustang for one of the few times that would happen. The Mustang was still a subcompact having its roots tied to the Ford Pinto. The Camaro’s extruding bumpers fore and aft were now camouflaged beneath urethane fascia making the car sleeker than before. The seller’s ’78 is a Rally Sport, which had returned as a separate model (with or without Type LT trim). It’s also a numbers-matching vehicle with a 350 V8 and 4-speed transmission.

Chevrolet built 272,000 Camaro’s in 1978, more than a third more than Ford did with the Mustang (which was due to be redesigned in 1979). 17,500 examples of the Chevy pony car came as the Rally Sport model, which had been absent from the lineup for a time.  Removable T-Tops were on the options list and the seller’s RS has them. This Camaro looks a bit like a Z28 with its two-tone paint and the hood borrowed from a Z28 (so not all the paint on this car is original).

We’re told the interior is original and it presents quite well. It includes a CB radio (popular in the 1970s), given the microphone hanging from the ceiling. This is a well-equipped Camaro which includes factory air conditioning, though the seller says it needs a recharge. The indicated mileage is 61,000 and that could be actual, though not documented. The car sports a new set of Cragar chrome wheels which wear new rubber donuts.

This Camaro looks ready to hit the road, with a refresh tune-up and a new battery so you can drive it with confidence. From a storage unit in Jacksonville, Florida, this Chevy is available here on craigslist for $24,500. It’s not perfect, but certainly nice enough to make a lot of folks sit up and take notice. Hats off to T.J. for this Bow-Tie tip!

Ive always been a Camaro guy over a Firebird guy, but this one, in my opinion, looks like too much of a highschoolers car w/that wheel/tire setup. The luggage rack Z28 hood and the mismatched wheel and tire size has me seeing the owner as someone going through an identity crisis a few times during ownership. Cool car nonetheless, but not for that money.

Luggage rack adds zero credibility to the car.

      It’s factory, so it’s credible.

It looks like the better cars were blocking it in. Still, if you want nearly $25k for a non-Z28 1978 Camaro you need to put in the effort.

The factory tension rods work hard enough holding up the trunk lid when you have a spoiler, guaranteed you need to use a broomstick to hold it up with the luggage rack.

Hard no. Still needs the luggage rack removed. Don’t care if it’s factory or dealer add on, it’s hideous. Love Camaros, this one could be beautiful, but at the asking, there’s no room left to improve it and still keep value in it.
