Numbers-Matching 427/4-Speed! 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

Park a ’65 and ’66 C2 next to each other and there’s really not a whole lot of difference on the outside.  Of course, you’ll know either’s a big block if it has the protruding hood, but it’s what under that hood that makes the 1966 Corvette especially noteworthy, as this was the year that the 396 grew to 427 cubic inches.  Lots of buyers back then thought the 327 was the better choice for everyday driving, but nowadays it’s those big block cars that are more coveted, and if the thought of owning a 427 makes your mouth water this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette would definitely be worth checking out.  The car is located in Wrentham, Massachusetts, and can be found here on Craigslist with an asking price of $89,995.

We’d like to thank Barn Finds reader Pat L. for finding this one and sending it our way!  The seller tells us that his Corvette has been in a car collection for the last 23 years with 2 separate owners, and mentions that the car appears to have had one respray in its original color of white.  All of the exterior photos seem to have been taken in the shade, but from what we can see the body looks to be in really nice shape all the way around, as does the paint.  The chrome bumpers and knock-off wheels all look to be nicely preserved as well.

Open up the hood and you’ll find the original numbers-matching 427, with the 450 HP decal on top of the air cleaner, which was the original specification for the horsepower.  The powers that be at Chevy lowered the rating to 425 not long after the 427 was introduced, although no actual changes were made to the engine and it was nothing more than an administrative decision.  The 4-Speed manual is also the factory transmission, and with this original drivetrain still intact this is one C2 that’s almost sure to just keep going up in value.  No word on whether or not either has ever had a rebuild, but with only 65,000 original miles there may not have ever been the need for an overhaul.

The interior is stated to be all original, and other than a couple of small tears in the driver’s seat everything in there looks more than acceptable for a more than 50-year-old sports car.  Nothing is mentioned about the birdcage or the underside, but if the condition of the side pipes is any indicator of how things look down under maybe it’s good and solid below as well, although I’d probably at least ask before I dipped that deeply into my retirement funds.  What are your thoughts on this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible?

I remember hearing the difference in the 425 and 450 horsepower rating was that it was read at different R.P.M.’s on the dyno . Corporate was feeling heat about the higher reading so they doused the flames somewhat with the lower rating ? This car is a very nice example of a survivor thats been enjoyed through out its life, too bad its been resprayed although it looks well done . I like it but I’m suffering from “fundzalow” right aboot now.

That didn’t take long. Perhaps 90K is now a bargain price for BB C2s.

I believe it was likely a hoax that’s why the listing was deleted. I say this because I live in the same small town and I would know if this car was in my neighborhood, believe me!!
