Older Restoration: 1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible

Finding a classic car that is an older restoration is generally not a bad thing. It might not be an original survivor, but if the vehicle has held up well in the intervening years, it’s usually a sign that the work has been performed to a high standard. This 1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible is just such a car. It was placed into dry storage a while back but has now been returned to active duty. It perfectly combines good looks with impressive performance and is looking for a new home. It is located in Hackensack, New Jersey, and has been listed for sale here on eBay. The BIN on the GTO has been set at $39,995, but if you’re feeling a bit lucky, you can always make an offer.

The backstory for this Starlight Black GTO is not that clear. The owner states that it is an older restoration, but it isn’t clear when the work was completed. The car was recently removed from dry storage, but it isn’t clear how long it was parked. One thing is for sure, and that is that the Convertible presents exceptionally well. Black paint is going to show every sin, but these panels look perfectly straight. There is no evidence of any previous accident damage, and the gaps look tight. The owner states that the Pontiac is rust-free, and there are no signs of any problems in the supplied photos. The power top is new and is said to work as it should. The trim and chrome sparkle in the sun and there are no apparent issues with the glass.

The Red interior of the GTO isn’t perfect, but gee, it isn’t bad either. There is some stretching of the upholstery on the front seats, the wheel has a crack in the rim, and the lower section of the dash on the driver’s side is discolored. That’s a list of the worst of the faults because the rest of the upholstery and trim present superbly. It is also completely original. No aftermarket stereo or gauges have been allowed to sully the interior, and the factory AM radio still resides in the dash. Addressing the issue with the wheel and the lower dash would be easy but would not be necessary. The stretched upholstery would be classed as regular wear-and-tear and add to the vehicle’s character.

The GTO is a numbers-matching car and features a 389ci V8, a Powerglide transmission, and power steering. The engine should be capable of producing 335hp. This is enough power to launch the Convertible through the ¼ mile in 15.5 seconds. It isn’t clear how long the Pontiac was in storage, but I get the impression that we are talking about years and not months. The owner has fitted a new fuel tank and flushed the fuel system. With that done, the GTO started right up. A new exhaust has recently been installed, and few miscellaneous parts have also been swapped. The owner says that the 389 sounds sweet and that the car runs and drives. He does say that it would pay to have the Convertible thoroughly inspected before any extended journeys are attempted. That sounds like a fairly wise piece of advice to me.

The Pontiac GTO is the stuff of legends, and they are a classic car whose value continues to grow steadily with each passing year. Good examples can easily sell for $45,000, while a pristine, numbers-matching example can potentially sell for $80,000 or more. This one looks promising on paper, and if an inspection confirms this, it could be a reasonable buy at the price. Of course, if the owner accepts a lower, realistic offer, that would make it even better. It costs nothing to ask the question, does it?

    Nice car.

The mechanic I used to use in another state has a triple black 66 GTO he and his wife bought back in the 70s. He is a former Pontiac parts manager and recently finished a several year long restoration.

    Good luck with the auction.

Good looking car there, the only thing I’d like to see changed is something like a tremec overdrive auto be slipped into it in place of the powerglide noted.

Once again, the PowerSlide was only used in Chevrolets. The transmission in this Pontiac is a Super Turbine 300 2-speed automatic. This trans was used in Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs. It shares no parts with the PowerSlide.

Both the PowerGlide and Super Turbine 300s were intended as cheap trans missions and in the later years, a cheaper alternative to Turbo 350s and 400s.

Unless you’re doing 6 second quarter miles, a 2 speed doesn’t scream performance.

    Lesson over, again.

Appears to be a decent looker, someone got carried away with sanding and got into the trim tag unfortunately. Get rid of that plastic fuel filter immediately and get the correct heat shield/tube for the positive battery cable. It is wrapped behind the brake line, it won’t take much for the insulation to be worn away and create a HUGE short circuit. Those two components are screaming fire!
