Once Grand Tourer: Jaguar XK150 FHC

While looking quite sad here, this Jaguar XK150 fixed-head coupe is still one of the most symbolic vehicles to leave the Coventry assembly line. Combining grace, speed and exclusivity like few other cars could do, the XK-series in coupe form remains a coveted classic today. This XK150 is located in New Jersey but appears on the UK eBay site, ready for export. If you’d like to keep it stateside, check it out here on eBay with an opening bid of just over $25K and no action yet. 

With mismatched tires, stained paint and dust-covered windows, it’s clear this XK150 has fallen to the depths of project car ownership and is a long way from Pebble Beach. But what is visible beneath that rough exterior appears to show a solid car, a sentiment the seller echos. The shut lines look good, bumpers are still attached and the pretty wire wheels just need to be re-chromed (but plan on re-doing all of the chrome while you’re at it).

This being a manual transmission example makes it even more desirable, and the glovebox reveals it’s been coveted by rodents, too, as a winter home. The dash is surprisingly intact compared to the exterior but the interior seating surfaces, carpeting and door panels will all likely need replacement. A leather-covered dash replaced wood trim in the XK150. Glass is pleasingly uncracked but that’s about it for a list of superlatives, other than noting that there’s no evidence of major alterations from stock condition.

The seller says this is the correct matching inline-six for the XK150. Power figures throughout the production cycle ranged from 190 b.h.p. to 265 b.h.p., but the specific motor in this example is not disclosed; perhaps one of our Jaguar experts can decode the various number plates in the eBay gallery to confirm the specification. Regardless of equipment, the XK150 was a fast, exclusive grand tourer, and we’re anxious to see this one return to form with a proper restoration.

    25k is a lot of money for a car this rusty even if it is a jag. Because it’s a jag I’d say 10k and that’s being jenerous. Restoring the wheels alone will likly cost you 10k. I’d say find a better one to start with.

    As so often happens, the ad is pretty weak. Especially when he’s starting at $25k. Nowhere near enough photos, and more text about his shipping history than the car itself. I guess the ad is just a calling card, so maybe it doesn’t matter to a serious buyer.

    Interesting car. My wife likes these, but they have always been out of our budget. This one does look pretty solid, but of course there are no pictures of the underside. It COULD be a good starting point. I’m sure someone will save it, and I’d love to see it when it’s done.

      It’s understandable when a private seller doesn’t include many pictures, often without useful details, and has a description light on specifics. But there is no reason to give a dealer the benefit of the doubt. They are either lazy or hiding something. This dealer only has European exotics listed, he would know better.

    If the car was free, the cost of the restoration exceeds the value of a fully restored car ( with matching numbers). In the end, you will hate the car for the problems dealing with the restorer. The finished job and the invoices at double what they estimate will spoil all ownership pride. Then, you will sooner and likely not later, you’ll sell her. That experience will be like selling a painting of your Ex. It’s was great once, and no one will be convinced that there was or will be true love.

    I just did a 120, coupe. Same job. Cost was 135.000 $$.

        You were lucky with a Pinto. All I had was an Austin-Healey 3000 MK III, a back breaker like you would not believe.
        I doubt if there was any rear suspension, I don’t remember any suspension and I do not want to remember. I might have been 6’11”, instead of the 6’7″ that I am.

    I have restored a few of these XKk series cars from 120 thru 150’s and they are remarkably simple to restore. Time consuming yes but relatively easy to restore. The killer is the interior. That requires a true expert. The interiors are some of the most complex I have come across. I could see the interior running over 30k easily.

    If you are willing to do the work yourself even the 20K asking price could keep your head above water but sending it out to a shop will cost as noted before $135K. I can tell you that these are amazing fun to drive. More discrete than the XKE and almost as fast and as fun to drive.

    Buyer beware but things are not as bad as it looks. That being said if the frame is screwed up by rust do not walk away, Run, Run Quickly. That can be a deal killer on these.

    Back when I was in the service, one of the guys I was stationed with bought something very similar to that one. He bought it from a guy that lived out off the Calif desert. Between the wind and sand the body of clean of all paint and no indication of rust. Unfortunately all the glass was trash but the body was clean. Never knew if he ever got it going or not as I left there soon after.
    I kind of like the body too, but not this one.
