Once In A Barn: 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air

Chevrolet had a hit on their hands with what would become known as the “Tri-Fives” of 1955-57. Some of the credit for selling nearly five million Chevies during this period may go to the return of a V8 engine after 37 years. The seller’s 1956 Bel Air Sport Sedan (aka 4-door hardtop) presents quite well and has newer upgrades in terms of the engine and brakes. Located in Wilburn, Arkansas, this two-tone show-off is available here on eBay for $29,950 OBO.

The ’56 Chevies were easy to identify over the ‘55s with the most obvious being a rework in the shape of the rear wheel openings. And the Sport Sedan body style wasn’t on the roster in 1955, reserved for the 210 and Bel Air models, but not the Plain Jane 150s. The seller’s Sport Sedan is one of 109,000 Bel Airs and appears to be finished in Crocus Yellow over Laurel Green paint, though I can’t be certain – not a common pairing of hues.

We’re told that this Chevy is a two-owner car with 93,000 miles. It spent a number of years in a barn which apparently spared the car from damage. The engine is a swap and the seller thinks it’s a 283 cubic inch V8 which debuted in 1957. Before that, only a 265 was offered and the seller says that version of the original motor also comes with the sale, condition unknown. Four new tires will also come along, seemingly unmounted.

The seller isn’t clear, but it sounds like the front drum brakes have been replaced with discs, power-assisted. We assume the tranny is a 2-speed Powerglide and the seller’s language implies that the paint and interior came that way from the factory. This looks like a solid daily driver that could turn a few heads at Cars & Coffee.

That’s a beautiful car. One of the best body styles ever built. I wish they would go back to building 4 door hardtops today.

One of my all time favorite 4 door ( pillared and pillarless) is the ’55 and ’56 Chevy BelAir. This is a beautiful car.

I believe the 4-door HT “sport sedan” was first available in 56, and all the 4-door 55’s were “post” sedans.

The Crocus Yellow and Laurel Green pairing was a recommended two-tone paint job.

What a gorgeous car! I’ve had 2 ’56’s, both taken from me by light running idiots. One head on, the other a T-bone. Both were deemed unrepairable and hauled unceremoniously to the scrap yard. I love the ’56, in any body style. $30k almost doesn’t seem like a bad price for a good looking, ready to go car.

My dad had the same car, same color combo. He sold it when we moved from RI to CT in 1966 for 75 dollars. It needed a valve job. I was in 4th grade at the time.

Beautiful car. My favourite years for the Chevy Bel Air are the 1956 and 57 model years. 🙂
