One Family Owned: 1970 Chevelle SS 396

The 1970 model year was perhaps the heyday for the Chevelle Super Sport, with both 396 and 454 versions of the car available. In fact, nearly 53,600 of these hotties left the factory that year, making for a decent supply today. And the regular Chevelle Malibu has become a prime candidate for cloning or the creation of tribute cars. This ’70 SS 396 has been in the same family since now but has fallen on hard times, given up its 396 for a grocery-getter 305, and no longer runs. Located in Aubrey, Texas, this Chevy is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached $13,207.

Purchased new in June of 1970, this mid-size Chevrolet comes with documentation passed down by the family showing that the protect-o-plate and title are in the original owner’s name. And the build sheet was recovered from under the seat stating how this Malibu left the plant as an SS 396. But the passage of time and Mother Nature have not been kind to the machine, which shows 20,000 miles on the odometer, but the seller has no idea what it really is. This Chevelle has its share of rust issues, including the floorboards, left front fender, left rear quarter panel, windshield channel, and trunk floor. There is evidence of earlier rust repair work that wasn’t done particularly well, so the right rear quarter and right front fender may both need replacing.  In summary, this car is going to need a lot of bodywork.

There are no photos provided of the interior and no mention is made of its condition, so assume the worst. But we are told it has a 60/40 split-bench seat (were those even offered on the ’70 Chevelle?) and the automatic transmission is shifted from the steering column. This auto came with a vinyl top, which has been stripped away with the chrome moldings relegated to the trunk. This was a factory air-conditioned muscle car and we’re told all the hardware has survived to perhaps cool passengers again on a hot day.

The 396 engine (actually 402 cubic inches) was pulled at some point and rebuilt, but still sits with a plastic wrapper around it. Rather than wait on renewing that motor, a later 305 V8 was found to put in its place, which probably made it a rather anemic performer. But that engine no longer functions either, so the buyer will want to reinstall the 396 which we’re told is numbers matching. The seller says the TH-400 and 12-bolt rear end are original to the Chevelle as well. We assume everything is there to bring the car back to glory. But if not, aftermarket sources are not in short supply to help rebuild a car like this.

Nice find for sure and well worth the asking.

    This will disappear quickly.

Not if the want a matching numbers 1970 Chevelle SS with documentation. Someone could probably can find a 1970 Malibu in better shape for the money, as long as they were patient and persistent. However, the ship sailed years ago when it comes to finding a real SS in halfway decent shape at that price point.

The pictures are terrible. The only picture that shows the bodywork is fuzzy you can’t make heads or tails of it. No under carriage photos. Needs a in person inspection to really see what is going on.

The 396 should be taken a part again. You should never wrap them in plastic.
