Lost among the hubbub over special Porsche models from the 993 and G-Series years is that the 964 chassis featured one of the most exclusive 911 models ever built. The 911 Turbo S2 seen here is one of just 20 ever produced, and one of just two wearing Porsche Guards Red paint! The S2 was built to comply with homologation rules so Porsche could demonstrate the 964’s prowess in IMSA-sanctioned events. This one listed here on craigslist is selling for a cool $180,000 somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
This example was most recently seen as a no-sale on Bring A Trailer, where bidding stalled out a few grand south of the current asking price. The S2 began life as a standard-issue Turbo model, then went Porsche tuner ANDIAL in California for a variety of enhancements, ranging from a larger intercooler to ported and polished cylinder heads, which gave the S2 a robust 322 brake horsepower.
The S2 was intended specifically for the US and Canadian markets – a rare instance of a factory hot-rod built for our market. Despite being built as a direct extension of the factory race car Porsche intended to use in the IMSA Bridgestone Potenza Supercar Championship, this one has remained largely stock with just an aftermarket radio and Bilstein shocks as the major deviations.
The 911 has recently undergone fairly extensive servicing, including “…an engine out service in 2011 by Rothsport Racing in Sherwood, OR which included replacement of the clutch and flywheel, a turbocharger rebuild, a valve adjustment, new suspension components and more, while maintaining overall original condition (which is rare in these cars).” Yes, it’s expensive, but as the saying goes – find me another one?
Why not buy a 2019 911 Turbo w/540hp and save $20k?
It depends on what you plan to do with it. If you want to only drive it to Cars and Coffee (or not at all) and brag about how exclusive your Porsche is, you buy this one.If you want to enjoy your investment, and not worry about a scratch devaluing it (at least not as much), you buy a new one.
The reason I would take this over a brand new Porsche is simply summed up in two words:paddle shifter. I don’t think you can even get a brand new Porsche in an actual manual transmission anymore which in my opinion is the only way to buy a sports car.! Paddle shifters, Tiptronic Etc are a joke for sports cars! Yes, they can be faster but they’re not meant for sports cars, sports cars were designed for actual manual transmissions with a clutch and a flywheel and a stick shift with a gate! Correct me if I’m wrong but can you even order a Porsche anymore and an actual stick? This car is gorgeous in every single way.

I don’t know – this is one of the last 911s that is really trying to kill you. If you want that in a modern Porsche your only choice is a GT2 or GT2RS and they cost more than this.
Also the 964 was the last somewhat hand built 911 – the level of craftsmanship definitely went down with the 993. So if you want the latest really high quality, lovingly built Porsche that is also trying to kill you this is your only choice.
For the record, I would rather have a turbo 964 than any other kind of 911, ever.
Two words, “Air cooled”. Love this color combination. My ’86 911 is similar.
Nice!
Nicer!
You’re on the wrong website!
Of course you get new (character-missing, mass-produced) cars with better performance for a better price, but that is obviously NOT the point for classic car enthusiasts…!
Somewhere in the Pac NW?? It’s listed in Vancouver, WA across the Columbia River from Portland! No sale on BAT in July at $162,000 plus buyer’s fee. Sure looks like $180,000 is close.
Neat car, rare I get, but where’s the barn?
It’s a survivor and it must have been stored in the best kind of barn – one that didn’t leak or have a dirt floor…
Seeing a $180,000 car for sale on Craigslist is freaky.
Imagine the kind of people that call about this car.
Every Prince in Nigeria.
2019 Corvette ZR1. 755 hp. 0-60 2.9 sec. 215 top speed. $123,820.
2018 McLaren 720S. 710 hp. 0-60 2.5 sec. 212 top speed. $288,845
2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. 700 hp. 0-60 2.7 sec. 211 top speed. $294,250
In case you missed it- The ZR1 is $123,820. Equal performance at one-half the cost. The Inconvenient Truth that is the Chevrolet Corvette.
Great performance, world class. But to my eyes the new Vette has lost its way on styling… reminds me of something Pontiac would have designed during their era of trying too hard.
Can’t disagree with that statement. GM has pushed the limits on the styling. I can do without the back wing on the “Zed” R. Happy Thanksgiving!
Plus don’t forget cost of the gold chains, Gucci loafers and monthly hair dye for the Corvette. lol
Doug- Please post an image the next time you see someone in a Corvette matching your description. lol.
And the “girlfriend”.
And you think the “girlfriend” is a problem? Interesting.
Post is now deleted.
The prevailing stereotype of the Corvette driver with gold chains, Members Only jacket, beer gut, and questionable lady friend may have been more apropos in the ’70’s. The ones I see now are much older, more likely to be wearing a VietNam Veteran hat, baggy jeans, and having a hard time getting any woman to ride in “that awful car”.
For the record, I’m 68, on my second Corvette, have never worn a gold chain or owned a Members Only jacket, and my wife changed her hairstyle to deal with riding in a convertible. Frank Sumatra has a point. I’ve always thought that my wife is the girl that other guys wish they’d married.
Many Corvette drivers like the cars for what they’re capable of doing, and we enjoy driving them. That’s also the main reason why people buy Porsches despite the small minority who are just pretenders.
There’s a certain amount of smugness knowing that my Corvette will outperform many cars that cost far more. But the truth is that I’m probably not a good enough driver to ever know.
Same, great comment ccrvtt. I might have had the questionable lady ride along, but always great looking and a lot of fun. They probably thought I was questionable also. Turned out, the girls were very nice. This was post disco though!
OK guys – I’m definitely over 65, married to the gal I fell in love with at a high school dance, etc. Vehicles in my small stable – 65 Kirkham 427 Cobra; ’67 Sunbeam Tiger; ’65 Sunbeam Tiger; ’64 Merc Marauder; and my latest “business car” – ’06 MB SL600 (cost approx $18,000).
Wife won’t ride in Cobra; has no idea how fast the SL600 is; tolerates the ’67 Tiger and wonders what the hell am I going to do with ’64 Merc.
’90 ZR1 Corvette for five years; no gold chains – just drive the wheels off it
Thank you Covette Guys! My wife had the 84 Z-51, 4-speed out today to pick up our son at the airport. She hasn’t driven it in a while. I got a text from her- “WOW THAT WAS FUN!” Never one to let a good text go to waste I replied “Looks like time for a new one” Her reply- Yep” I have it in print boys. I’ll keep you posted.
I don’t think anyone can argue that Corvette wins the bang for the buck contest. Too bad it was styled by an Origami artist. Maybe the new middle engine car will take it to the next level. You buy what you like and your checkbook will support. Supply and demand doesn’t need a 0-60 time to justify itself. It is what it is.
The S2 was a rear wheel drive version of the all wheel drive S4. The ‘race’ versions were the RS and the CS.
Further proof: those door panels are standard 911, as is leather and carpet.
Just 20 made? It might have gone to an aftermarket tuner, but from the factory, the S2 was the budget Turbo.
In the last couple of decades, car companies/car magazines made or make such a big deal about 1 or 2 new added paint colors when a new model YEAR comes out(same old body), & sometimes even restrict availability or charge a BIG premium, making a total of what, 7 or 8 colors, most of which are black, white, greys, & silvers – yuk.
Unless my monitor is off, this red-orange paint looks just like no extra charge common as dirt back then GM bucanneer red from 1974. If only today’s younger buyers knew how it USED to be –>

Plus you could order special colors not normally available on what you wanted to buy, for no extra or nominal charge!
But you can be SURE younger drivers are not following this website. Most do not even know what a 1st gen camaro looks like or who made it!
