Making end-of-life decisions is certainly not a pleasant subject to think about, but since I’ve rarely been in a funeral procession with a memorable lead vehicle, choosing something classy and vintage ahead of time might offer your loved ones a bit more comfort during that dreaded drive to your final resting place. Unfortunately, this 1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith Hearse here on eBay is not currently commissioned to provide this sort of service. However, in the past, I imagine it may have provided mourners with a much-needed smile or two during such a sad time. Located in Torrance, California, this one’s a show-winning beauty, with the opening bid of $59,625 yet to be placed. Owning it today is another option, as there’s also a buy-it-now price of $79,500.

Although Rolls-Royce revived the Wraith moniker in 2013, the early examples are pretty rare, with production beginning in 1938. With World War II on the horizon, just under 500 were produced, with RR constructing the chassis and independent coachbuilders taking over from there. According to the seller, just 58 examples of the Wraith still exist, with this being the only hearse. It’s believed that this one may have been one of the few, or perhaps the only Wraith that was initially constructed as a hearse, so there’s a possibility that it’s truly a one-of-a-kind from the beginning.

The stunning two-tone grey exterior, in such fine condition, leads one to expect the interior to be equally robust. Fortunately, things are stunning inside, with a presentation that’s both elegant and functional. Aside from the seats, most of the major components are handcrafted from wood and remain in excellent condition overall. The seats are covered in red leather, and it’s thoughtful that a couple of small fold-down rear units have been incorporated into the sides, allowing for two additional occupants.

Measuring in at 4,257 cc, an inline-6 Rolls engine provides power, and it’s connected to a 4-speed manual gearbox. The seller reports that it’s in good running order, plus this one also took the “Best Of Show” honors at the Rolls-Royce Owner’s Club Lake Michigan Region Concours d’Elegance event in 2018. Given the rarity and exceptional condition here, I’m guessing this one will be a desirable commodity for RR collectors, and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone foregoes the auction and chooses the buy-it-now option. Any thoughts to share regarding this 1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith Hearse?

Imagine how many boards you could fit in through the hatch, on your way to the beach, dude!
The last car you’ll ever need.
Ooh, that smell…the smell of death surrounds you…
