One Owner? 81k Miles? Seven Grand? 1972 Plymouth Fury Suburban Wagon

If you are a Barn Finds reader in the vicinity of Placerville, California, you may want to act fast. This 1972 Plymouth Fury Suburban is claimed to be a one-owner wagon with 81,000 miles on it. It looks as solid as an inland California car should, and it’s priced at $7,000. I’ll be shocked if it’s still for sale by tomorrow, but our intrepid man in the field, Rocco B., managed to get the link to us before it disappeared. Good eye, Rocco. It’s located on the Sacramento craigslist.

The Suburban was offered in three trim levels in 1972: Suburban, Custom Suburban, and Sport Suburban (which had simulated wood trim on the side). It appears that this is the base model, which was less commonly ordered than its line mates.

This one is the nine-passenger version, which was the rarest Suburban of them all: a mere 2,773 were built out of 54,148 Fury wagons for the 1972 model year. Everything in the interior appears to be in outstanding original condition, totally unexpected for the type of job that these cars were bought to do. The color combination is striking, especially in an era of earth tones: Blue Sky (what a name) exterior with blue interior. Like many 1970s cars I’ve seen, the interior plastics seem to have faded into about six different shades of blue, but that’s fine.

Unfortunately, the seller failed to either mention what engine is under the hood or to take closeup pictures, although “it runs surprisingly well,” and “the transmission works as it should.” I’ve tried enlarging the picture, and my guess is that it’s either a 318 or a 360 (150 or 175 horsepower, respectively), and it appears to have air conditioning. The brakes work as well, but there is a crack in the windshield. Nothing’s perfect.

It also appears to have some missing trim on the passenger door that may be tough to source, but other than that, this looks like a clean, original station wagon. The seller even mentions that they’ve seen similar cars that aren’t this nice sell for more money. Why the cheap price? Who knows, but the seller says that it has a clean title and is “out of the DMV system,” so “there are no back fees.” As I said, if this is a legitimate wagon, it will be sold before we know it. People love their station wagons and their Mopars, and you can hardly go wrong with this full-size longroof.

In 1972 I purchased a new Fury Sport Suburban just prior to the gas crisis. It got 9 mpg but otherwise served me well. The family drove it until the early 80’s and I can’t recall that it ever had any serious issues.

Definitely has AC (unless it’s removed). Those that didn’t had dash vent deletes (I think I have some of those if anyone needs them), same dash as Polara/Polara Custom/Monaco sisters in this build class.
The base engine for these was the 318, but the 360 was optional (as were big blocks).
The RF door rub rail is the same as on any 4-door model. Sedan front doors fit the wagon.

The price is right for the shape of the wagon. Maybe add dual exhuast and dodge mag rims but save the originals.
