One Owner Barn Find Pony! 1966 Mustang Convertible

Whoever buys this well-kept 1966 Mustang convertible will enjoy the rare treat of discussing the car’s history dating back to the car’s purchase from new. Thanks to Patrick S. who spotted this pampered pony here on eBay. The seller begins “This car was purchased new in October 1965 by my father as a birthday gift for my mother and has been in the family ever since.” Wow! I’m already sold. Then we learn this Carpinteria, California classic has been garaged in California its entire life and ran “excellent” when parked. Compared to some flipper cars we see… on a trailer… that look like they rolled down Mount Everest… with an eight-word listing in ALL CAPS… I’m in love!

The seller accounts that this drop-top cruiser is all original except for “a respray in 1985 and a valve job at 60k miles.” Daily-driven until about 1985, it then saw occasional use, and to date has accumulated 85,000 miles total.

It may be tempting to try starting it after buying a battery, plugs and a few gallons of gas, but since it’s been living in a garage since 2000, the buyer will be wise to resist their urge to twist the key until it’s been gone through from end to end. The interior is original with a few imperfections, and the buyer should budget for a replacement white convertible top.

The usually-reliable 289 has gone monochrome with garage dust. The seller claims it needed nothing beyond “front suspension work” when parked eighteen years ago. As expected the seller includes maintenance history, the original owner’s manual, and other documentation. What would you give for this nearly all-original one-owner rag-top?

I bought a car that was garage stored since the early 90s and it started right up after installing a fresh battery. Sure the fuel was nasty but I drove it on the car hauler. What a well preserved car. And a black plate car is the icing on the cake.

      I am with you.

After 20 years sitting my Fury started up with a carb cleanout and a gas can, plus a battery of course.

When she did start, there were no radiator leaks and the fuel pump worked just fine.

I guess Mopars are much stronger than Fords.

It’s presently at $14,600 and 36 bids with the reserve not yet met.it will be interesting to see what it ends up going for, it’s 1 of those cars that the value is going to be set by the person who really wants it.

I’d want to see more pictures, the eBay profile shows the seller as living in Carpenteria, which sits directly on the coast. He says the car is in Ventura, much of which also sits on the ocean. It may not be rusty since the coastal fog in that area often doesn’t penetrate more that a mile inland, but why take the chance. That black plate is also probably a later issue than 1966.

You’ve never been to Pacifica or Half Moon bay, every car that sits outside within 1/2 mile of the cost rusts from the top down.

It’s probably late 1966, Steve, if my memory is correct, and would have been purchased just about the time the ’67s appeared in showrooms.

Steve – I don’t think so. My first car was a 66 california car and started with ‘S’. So seems legit.

The black plate would be original to the car, as the plates started in ’63 and went thru ’69, my ’65 Buick has plates starting with MLH and are original issue.

I hope that surfboard next to the toolbox goes with it. It would look sweet sticking out of the back seat cruising to the beach! I am guessing we will soon see that Chevy panel thats on the rollback behind the Mustang on Ebay also.

I agree with Mark. The car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. This will be a nice ride for someone as long as acquisition cost doesn’t get out of sight.

Good thing about sitting for 18 years is that the last gas in the tank may have been non ethanol, solving a myriad of potential problems.

Hey seller, push her out into the sunlight for way better pics and you will see you reserve met much quicker.

The author says valve job at 60,000 miles with 85,000 total miles.
eBay discription says valve job at 100,000 miles and 187,000 miles total.
That is a huge difference. I was thinking $25,000.00 To $28,000.00 but with 102,000 more miles on the clock and with out a cleaning and better photos, IMHO, I don’t see it breaking $20,000.00.
I could be wrong but we’ll see shortly.

That is (based on what we can see) a decent looking Mustang, pretty much normal wear and tear and that looks light. Gary even if the car had 180K miles this car will very likely get stripped to the bare frame and rebuilt back up from there, I highly doubt this car will ever be a daily driver. Somebody will buy it because they owned a beat to heck version in high school with a straight 6 in it and they always pined for the V-8. They will buy this, probably pay to much then take it to a rod shop and put another 50K into resto and it will sit in the garage under a car cover only to see light maybe 3 to 4 times a year! Happy ending to some sad ending for others!

My Mom jump started my interest in Mustangs (she had one when I was knee high to the bumper). I wish I had the means to buy this for her.
