One Owner Carport Find: 1964 Pontiac GTO

Pontiac introduced the GTO in 1964 as an option on the mid-size LeMans/Tempest. GM bean counters thought there would be a market for 5,000 copies a year – a drop in the bucket compared to the 32,400 that were built in the first year alone. This carport find is a one-owner car that’s been idle for many years and comes with up to three engines to help get it back on the road. From Lake Norman, North Carolina, this once-hot Poncho is available here on craigslist for $14,500 (reduced from the original listing). Kudos to Chuck Foster for turning us on to this tip!

This GTO is still wearing its factory Sunfire Red paint, but exposure to the elements for an extended period has worn it out. The seller refers to this Pontiac as a survivor, but that would mean it’s largely intact and runs. That’s no longer the case. The car’s original 389 cubic inch V8 is still around, but a 1970s 350 V8 has replaced it under the hood. And if none of these appeal to you, the seller has a third motor, a 389 with Tri-Power carburetion, that’s also available (for extra cost, we assume).

We’re told the body and frame are solid, despite living under a carport for what is likely to have been many years. Because it’s a one-owner car, the seller can recite much of its history and has original documentation, which includes the window sticker, Protect-O-Plate, and the original title. The odometer reading of 85,000 is said to be correct.

The Pontiac had a 4-speed, and the factory case has survived (but perhaps its innards have not). An automatic is in place now, perhaps having come with the 350 replacement. The black interior, from what we can see of it, looks pretty good overall. The seller is not opposed to a trade, but it would have to be for something cool – whatever that would be. Would you rebuild the original 389 or opt for an LS swap, as the seller suggests?

    It’s only a survivor if it has the heart that it was born with. By all means, get the 389 and 4spd back. It would be worth so much more. It seems such a shame that possibly somebody might do differently with the different engine options available.

      The ad says it has had a “storied history” I’m sure there is a story behind the bench seat. It also has a 67 steering wheel, maybe at one time it had a 4 spoke wood wheel?

      Checkered flag on the speedo was 1965. There is a ton of paperwork, bill of sale, window sticker, original title, and Protect-O-Plate. A PHS would be a bonus, but if the Protect-O-Plate EUN matches the engine EUN, it’s pretty much a sealed deal original. Maybe the guy had a large family or wanted his girl next to him while driving and installed a bench.

    Here I go again, it was a used car! Come on, when I was 17 and my friend turned 16, he had an uncle with a used car lot, he got a well used 64 GTO convertible for 400 bucks I think it was. The 389 was tired and smoked something terrible. Was a looker, dark blue white interior. He ragged on it some more and I think it was junked after he was done with it. Hindsight is always 20 20 but these were used cars and we and nobody else cared. Some of these cars only exist because of sellers like this that dropped in another engine and kept the car on the road. It wasn’t valuable or even really a collector car 30 years ago. This one looks like it wasn’t too badly abused over the years and should be put back to proper original order, but that won’t be too cheap with the price of good parts either. Even finding a good machine shop to machine the engine parts is getting tougher. Drive them while you can, more miles more smiles.

      man I grew up in a 66 that my dad had, wish he was still with us…if he was still here I would have to have this one. I saw its in NC , and I’m next door in TN, DANG IT MAN !

    Damn, this car is only about an hour from me, l really like this one if I wasn’t in the middle of restoring a 67 Chevelle SS I would definitely check it out

    Not in the orginal owners hands so don’t blame him. Being sold by a the second owner and most likely where the missing parts went – to his cars.

    looks like a 67 bench seat and as was stated a 67 steering wheel minus the horn button.with the price of parts and availability….sheesz,thats going to be a chllenge

    My girlfriends Dad bought a brand new 64 “Goat.” Purple metallic stock and so cool that it got stolen (in Baltimore City, of course!). The owner only had the GTO for two weeks! Left up on blocks by some thief who had no regard for class. Sad!!!
